Chapter 10 - “YOU NEVER EVEN CHECKED”

Noah’s shouted accusation at funeral became national clip.
Someone had recorded.
“YOU NEVER EVEN CHECKED!”
It played across social media.
Commentators called him psychic, hero, lunatic, devoted son.
Noah hated all.
He had checked.
Daniel had not.
That was the point.
But even that was oversimplification.
Daniel had checked enough to know there might be a problem.
He simply never allowed the one check that mattered:
open casket and obtain new medical examination.
Why?
Noah wanted answer before police had it.
Claire stopped him.
“You’re becoming obsessed.”
“He almost buried you.”
“Yes.”
“You’re not angry?”
“I’m furious.”
“Different.”
“How?”
“You think anger means move.”
“I think anger can sit.”
Noah paced.
“Mom.”
“Sit.”
He did.
Claire had returned home two weeks after hospitalization.
Not Bedford house.
She rented a furnished townhouse in White Plains while her home remained evidence-relevant and emotionally unbearable.
Daniel was barred through legal orders from contacting her directly during investigation.
No arrest yet.
That infuriated Noah.
Claire understood.
“Cases take time.”
“He knew.”
“Then they need prove what.”
Noah looked.
“You don’t think attempted murder?”
“No.”
He stared.
“Mom.”
“I do not think Daniel caused my collapse.”
“How know?”
“I remember enough.”
“Could he have given—”
“No.”
She cut.
“Do not build story because it makes him easier to hate.”
Noah stopped.
Claire continued:
“The truth is worse for me.”
“What?”
“He was my brother.”
“He got scared when I fell.”
“He called doctor.”
“He cried.”
She swallowed.
“And then something changed.”
That was more chilling than mastermind.
Daniel did not plan to kill her.
He encountered death.
Believed it.
Then when doubt appeared, he realized her death solved a crisis.
And began protecting outcome.
Noah understood.
“That’s why you said he knew.”
“Yes.”
“Did you hear him clearly?”
“Enough.”
“What?”
Claire looked away.
“I remember him beside me.”
“Very close.”
“When?”
“Preparation room, I think.”
“What did he say?”
“‘If she wakes now, Meridian is dead.’”
Noah froze.
“Exact?”
“I think.”
“Mom.”
“I know.”
“You need tell Ellison.”
“I did.”
Detective Ellison treated memory carefully.
Trauma.
Altered consciousness.
Potential auditory distortion.
She sought corroboration.
Daniel had used phrase “Meridian is dead” in text to executive assistant Wednesday evening?
Investigators found:
DANIEL: If Claire somehow reverses this, Meridian is dead and I’m personally exposed.
Sent to company CFO Sasha Bell, Wednesday 5:58 p.m.
“Somehow reverses this.”
What did “this” mean?
Death?
Transaction authority?
Daniel argued:
If Claire’s legal status reversed due Noah’s challenge.
But why say “somehow” if he had no doubt?
Sasha told police Daniel called earlier:
“Noah is making noise that Claire isn’t dead.”
Sasha replied:
“Then check.”
Daniel:
“Selden checked.”
“Again.”
Daniel:
“I am not reopening my sister because Noah is spiraling.”
Sasha:
“Daniel, deal can wait.”
Daniel:
“No, it can’t.”
That call was not recorded, but Sasha contemporaneously texted husband:
Daniel is acting insane. His sister died and he’s still talking Meridian.
Timestamp.
Powerful.
Noah learned his uncle had been told directly:
deal can wait.
He said no.
Financial motive present.
Still, defense:
business stress.
grief.
doctor reassurance.
Then Sasha revealed one more thing.
Claire had emailed her draft board instruction before collapse.
Sasha did not receive until next morning due scheduled send? Maybe Claire scheduled? Better Claire saved draft in company system, discovered after. It explicitly suspended Daniel’s authority.
Daniel knew if Claire survived, he might be removed from management temporarily.
If she remained legally dead until Friday, he could close.
Potential $1.8 million personal exposure disappears.
Everything.
Noah’s accusation "you never even checked" evolved.
Daniel did check something.
Searches.
doctor.
legal effect.
financing.
He checked every consequence except Claire herself.
That was the moral center.
He investigated:
Could dead bodies move?
Could death certificate be corrected?
Would lender close?
Would trust authority pass?
He did not open lid.
Because opening lid created only one kind of information:
truth about Claire.
May you like
And by Wednesday evening, truth had become financially dangerous.
