Chapter 13 - CLAIRE REMEMBERS THE DARK

Memory returned unevenly.
Claire remembered sound before images.
Daniel.
A metal cart.
A woman’s voice.
A door closing.
She remembered being unable to move.
Not paralyzed consciously perhaps; body simply would not respond.
She could hear.
Then lose time.
Then hear again.
Trauma psychologist warned:
Do not force chronology.
Claire obeyed reluctantly.
She wrote fragments on cards.
No assumptions.
Daniel crying.
Cold.
Someone saying “doctor already signed.”
Car movement?
Flowers smell.
Daniel: “don’t reopen.”
Noah? I heard name.
One knock. My hand?
Then one night she remembered something specific.
A ringtone.
Daniel’s distinctive two-tone business alert.
Immediately after:
Daniel’s voice:
“Meridian can still close.”
Claire woke sweating.
Called Ellison next morning.
Detective checked Daniel’s phone records.
Wednesday 4:58 p.m., Daniel received message from Meridian attorney.
Timestamp aligns private prep-room visit.
5:00, Daniel’s phone connected to Hallowell Wi-Fi.
Claire could plausibly have heard.
Message text obtained:
Need confirmation of trustee authority tonight to hold Friday slot.
Daniel replied 5:06:
Will send.
Between 4:58 and 5:06, Daniel was in room with Claire.
Security footage.
If Claire remembers “Meridian can still close,” perhaps he spoke to himself or call.
Phone records show outgoing call at 5:01 to corporate counsel, duration 2m41.
Counsel Evan? need fresh name: Peter Sloan.
Sloan told police Daniel said:
“Meridian can still close if certificate stands, right?”
Exact.
Sloan answered:
“Assuming Claire is deceased and interim authority effective.”
Daniel:
“Yes.”
Sloan:
“Daniel, that’s assumption because we need certified record.”
Call occurred beside Claire.
Claire heard.
Then movement?
Peter remembered Daniel suddenly went quiet.
“What?”
Daniel said:
“Nothing.”
Then:
“If there were some question about pronouncement, what happens?”
Peter:
“What question?”
Daniel:
“Hypothetical.”
Peter:
“Then do not act until resolved.”
This was huge.
Daniel asked corporate counsel what happens if death questioned.
Counsel told:
do not act.
Did Daniel tell him Noah’s data?
No.
Did he stop?
No.
Peter wrote contemporaneous note:
D. asked odd hypothetical re reversal of death certification; advised no transaction if uncertainty.
Professional lawyers take notes.
There it was.
At 5:03, Daniel had legal advice:
If uncertainty, stop transaction.
At 5:44, he called doctor.
At 6:18, kept casket closed.
At 7:02, confirmed lender schedule.
Knowledge + advice + action.
Claire’s memory opened door.
Noah said:
“This is it.”
Prosecutor Morgan:
“It’s important.”
“Not ‘it.’”
He hated restraint.
She was right.
Daniel could say hypothetical grief.
He trusted doctor after.
Legal counsel did not know facts.
Still.
Then Claire remembered phrase that made her accuse him at funeral.
Thursday morning.
She had regained more awareness.
Dark.
Air.
A dull knock she made.
Footsteps.
Voices outside.
Leah:
“I heard something.”
Martin:
“Probably settling.”
Daniel:
“If you open it, Noah wins.”
Claire remembered rage.
She tried move.
Then Daniel:
“I know what I saw yesterday. I’m not doing this again.”
There.
I know what I saw yesterday.
What did he see?
Claire did not know.
Then:
“Doctor said reflex.”
That aligned Selden.
Daniel had seen movement Wednesday.
Knew.
Interpreted as reflex after doctor reassured.
But Thursday new knock.
He still refused.
Claire said:
“That’s why.”
“Why what?”
“Why I said ‘you knew.’”
Not because she knew he believed her fully alive.
Because he knew there was enough evidence to recheck.
He knew uncertainty was real.
And chose not.
Precise.
That precision made prosecution stronger.
Noah understood.
Daniel’s wrongdoing may not be:
I knew 100% she was alive.
It may be:
I knew there was substantial possibility and deliberately prevented verification because verifying could ruin my interests.
Legally different.
Morally devastating.
Claire told Morgan:
“Do not charge him with more than you can prove.”
Morgan looked surprised.
“He’ll use excess to call everything revenge.”
Claire nodded.
Smart.
Noah smiled.
“You really are my mother.”
“Unfortunately.”
They laughed.
Darkness began loosening.
Claire could close bedroom door now.
Not all night.
Some.
Recovery not magic.
The casket remained in police evidence temporarily.
Claire wanted never see.
Noah wanted burn.
Neither.
Object not enemy.
May you like
Daniel’s decision was.
