Chapter 21 - THE MONEY BEHIND THE PARTIESThe forensic accounting report was 184 pages.

Caleb read summary.
Claudia and Grant’s event business had revenue.
But losses larger.
They spent for image.
Luxury venues.
Designers.
Influencers.
Hotels.
Cars.
Catering.
Mercer Circle needed appear exclusive before profitable.
Where capital?
Family money.
Joint accounts.
Credit.
Milo trust withdrawals mislabeled.
Card in Caleb name.
Vendor payments.
Grant invested relatively little cash.
He contributed “network.”
Claudia carried financial risk using Harrison assets.
Caleb laughed bitterly.
“He built business with my family money.”
Avery:
“Yes.”
“And told Milo he was problem.”
“Yes.”
Why Claudia do?
She wanted independence.
Ironically financed with husband.
Her messages:
I need something that’s mine.
Grant:
Then stop asking permission.
That philosophy poisoned.
Independence became taking without consent.
Grant:
Caleb won’t miss 20k.
Claudia:
That isn’t point.
Grant:
Exactly. Stop acting like employee in your own marriage.
He reframed theft as empowerment.
Claudia accepted.
No excuse.
Psychologically plausible.
Then debts.
Claudia personally had $90k cards.
Grant’s company $300k liabilities.
Upcoming event memberships prepaid.
They needed keep house venue to avoid refund/cost.
Milo interfering threatened business not only image but money.
If party canceled, losses.
Hence kennel.
Profit over child.
That infuriated Caleb.
Then one line:
Grant charged “behavior management” as event security cost.
He paid a private staff member? Maybe not. He himself billed consulting hours around Milo. Absurd.
Avery:
“Jury may hate.”
Caleb:
“I hate.”
But no grandstanding.
Civil recovery.
Criminal investigation into fraud/identity misuse.
Claudia began cooperating more after Grant flipped.
She admitted unauthorized use.
She offered restitution from her assets and share of business.
Her attorney sought reduced criminal exposure.
Caleb did not control prosecutor.
He focused divorce/custody.
Milo learned they may sell some luxury items.
He asked:
“Mom’s necklace?”
“Maybe.”
“Dad, don’t take everything.”
Caleb looked.
“Why?”
“She’ll be sad.”
Despite all.
Child compassion.
Caleb said:
“We’re not trying make Mom poor.”
“We’re trying return money used wrong.”
Milo nodded.
Good.
Caleb refused punitive divorce.
Property divided lawfully.
He wanted house? Mostly Milo stable.
Claudia perhaps waived claim due settlement/restitution? Could happen. But not force.
Mansion title maybe Caleb inherited before marriage? Yet earlier called marital home. Let's say house largely Caleb premarital/family asset but Claudia had marital claims to appreciation. Settlement later.
Grant’s “Mercer House” dead.
Milo trust restored through Claudia/Grant restitution and Caleb contribution? Company? Here family. Caleb replaced any unrecovered amount personally immediately.
Avery:
“You don’t have to.”
“I do.”
But would that let perpetrators avoid? No, legal restitution still owed to Caleb/trust.
Milo’s future whole now.
He doesn’t need wait.
This mirrors Vincent paying first.
But fine.
Caleb told Milo:
“Your school money safe.”
Milo:
“I want dog school.”
Caleb laughed.
“Cooper already smarter.”
Then financial report found Claudia used $14,000 for family photos/branding that excluded Milo? A photoshoot for Mercer Circle at house. She removed family photos. Not direct theft from child maybe.
Milo asked:
“Why did Mom take our pictures down?”
Caleb:
“To make house look different for event.”
“Did she put back?”
“Sometimes.”
Milo:
“I thought because she didn’t want us.”
Caleb’s chest tightened.
Image choices interpreted as rejection.
Again.
Money behind parties was not only dollars.
It was priorities visible to child.
There was always money for flowers.
Champagne.
Hotel.
Grant.
Never time for Milo during events.
That taught value ranking.
Caleb now deliberately kept life ordinary.
No huge “welcome home” party.
For Milo birthday, small backyard.
Pizza.
Cooper.
Four friends.
Claudia attended supervised? Maybe later allowed with family therapist and boundaries. Could be too soon. Let's say she sent gift and video call approved.
Milo had fun.
No one told upstairs.
At end he said:
“This party is better.”
“Why?”
“I’m in it.”
That line nearly broke Caleb.
May you like
The money behind Claudia’s parties funded illusion of perfect life.
Milo needed one where he was allowed in frame.
