Chapter 13 - THEY STOLE THE ONLY DOOR SHE HAD LEFTEdith gave formal victim statement to investigator.

She struggled with word “victim.”
“I don’t like it.”
Dana:
“It describes what happened, not who you are.”
Edith accepted.
Question:
“What impact did financial transfers have?”
She initially said:
“$240,000.”
Then stopped.
“No.”
She looked at recorder.
“The money was not the impact.”
“What was?”
“It was my way out.”
Silence.
Edith continued.
“I realized my son and daughter-in-law did not want me there.”
“I realized they had been treating me badly many times.”
“I did not want police.”
“I did not want scandal.”
“I did not want punish my son.”
“I decided I would leave.”
She told Willowmere.
Room 214.
Savings.
Brochure.
Then money.
“When it disappeared, I thought I was trapped.”
“Did they know purpose?”
“Yes.”
“How know?”
“Account name.”
“Conversations.”
“They admitted.”
She cried.
“You didn’t just steal my money.”
“You stole the money I had saved to get away from you.”
That line later quoted in sentencing, but not public maybe.
Dana paused recording to offer tissue.
Edith:
“Keep recording.”
She wanted complete.
“They complained I was burden.”
“But when I tried stop burdening them, they stopped me.”
This contradiction central.
Why keep burden?
Because burden paid.
Because dependent elder easier access.
Because control.
The emotional abuse made financial exploitation possible.
Financial exploitation made escape harder.
Loop.
Then Edith described smaller freedoms:
Serena controlled snacks.
Nolan sold car.
mail.
phone.
friends.
doctor.
Each alone could be framed care.
Together cage.
Dana asked:
“Were you ever physically prevented leaving?”
“Not with locked door.”
“Except my means.”
She could theoretically walk out.
Where go?
No car.
No phone sometimes.
Money inaccessible.
Family telling confused.
Gate.
Age.
Coercion doesn’t require bars.
Edith had wealth but not practical access.
This case became strong example elder financial abuse.
But story remains personal.
At Willowmere, Edith began attending residents’ advocacy group.
One woman said daughter took checkbook.
Another son moved into house and never left.
Edith realized not unique.
Money + dependency + family shame.
Many don’t report.
She asked group leader:
“Why do we protect them?”
“Because they’re our children.”
Edith nodded.
Then:
“And because if we admit our children hurt us, it feels like we failed raising them.”
That was her deepest shame.
Nolan’s behavior felt verdict on Edith motherhood.
Leah Merritt challenged:
“Adults are responsible for adult choices.”
Edith:
“I taught him better.”
“Then he knew better.”
That actually hurt/helped.
Serena’s childhood? Not relevant.
Nolan knew.
One afternoon he sent flowers to Willowmere.
Card:
Mom, please remember good years. — Nolan
Edith stared.
There were good.
He taught her smartphone.
Took Henry fishing? Wait Henry dead.
Drove her appointments initially.
Christmas laughter.
Abuse doesn’t erase good.
Good doesn’t erase abuse.
She kept flowers in lobby, not room.
Claire:
“Why?”
“I don’t want wake seeing guilt.”
Boundary.
She did remember good years.
That made theft sadder, not less serious.
Then estate lawyers asked whether Edith wants sell lake property.
Nolan successor interest complicated but trust permits while Edith competent.
She hesitated.
House itself not guilty.
She considered returning.
No.
Maybe later use/restructure.
Eventually decided estate could be sold after case, but not immediately.
“I don’t want them thinking they drove me from my own house.”
Paul:
“You’re moving because you choose, not driven.”
Different.
She kept ownership while living Willowmere.
Could visit with staff/friends.
First visit after move, she walked terrace.
Hose gone.
Stone dry.
She stood where sprayed.
No panic? Some.
Marla joined.
Edith:
“I thought I needed escape.”
“You did.”
“Now I can come back because I don’t live here.”
Freedom changed place.
She went upstairs.
Opened balcony.
Fresh air.
Then she found note in drawer written before sirens:
I am not crazy.
I am leaving.
She held.
She didn’t need first line anymore.
She tore only that line? Maybe keep as history.
She added beneath:
I left.
Then returned Willowmere.
The door they stole with $240,000 had reopened through intervention.
May you like
But Edith wanted record clear:
She had found it first.
