Chapter 20 - THE SON BECOMES PART OF THE INVESTIGATIONNolan initially positioned as negligent son manipulated by wife.

Serena as abuser.
Public sympathy:
poor man between mother/wife.
Evidence dismantled.
He authorized transfers.
Created invoices.
Drafted trust amendment.
Used signature page.
Knew no incapacity.
Blocked adviser.
Participated gaslighting.
He didn’t spray.
But scheme financial/control substantial.
Prosecutors expanded.
Nolan’s lawyer changed tone:
family financial dispute, not criminal theft.
Argued Nolan expected inheritance and had long managed.
Expectation not ownership.
Paul:
“My client was alive.”
That line.
Nolan told investigators:
“Dad always said take care family money.”
No written permission.
Henry trust says Edith welfare first.
Then business debt.
Nolan admitted shame.
“I didn’t want Mom know I failed.”
So he took.
One $40k transfer became chain.
Serena pressured.
But he could stop.
Didn’t.
Then incapacity.
Why?
“Because once Mom started questioning, I panicked.”
There.
Not because dementia.
Because scrutiny.
He told:
“I thought if I formally managed, I could fix accounts before she saw.”
So amendment cover.
That admission key.
He intended repay maybe.
But conceal still.
Nolan’s tragedy:
He loved mother perhaps.
Yet money/image overtook.
He still visited hospital.
Bought birthday gifts.
Said he loved.
People can love and exploit.
Edith had trouble.
Leah:
“Love is not legal defense.”
Nor moral enough.
Then Nolan asked plea deal.
He wanted avoid trial publicity and harsher.
Serena cooperation increased evidence.
He considered testifying against Serena? She already.
Couple marriage collapsed.
Texts between lawyers show Serena filing divorce.
Edith felt strange.
“They destroyed each other.”
Paul:
“They made independent choices.”
No gloating.
At one mediated family session before plea, Nolan finally named.
“I stole money.”
Edith waited.
“I lied about your memory.”
She cried.
“I knew you wanted leave.”
“I helped keep you there.”
Hardest.
“Why?”
“Because I needed time.”
“To fix debt.”
“To stop you from removing me from trust.”
“And because I was angry.”
“At me?”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“For Dad leaving everything under your control.”
“For feeling like I was still a child waiting.”
“For you saying no when I needed money.”
Edith stared.
She had never known resentment.
“You were forty.”
“I know.”
“My no was allowed.”
“I know.”
“Your father’s money became mine.”
“I know.”
“Not yours until documents say.”
“I know.”
He cried.
“I hated feeling like I had to ask.”
Edith:
“So you took.”
“Yes.”
There.
No Serena.
She breathed.
This was what wanted.
Not to free him.
To hear adult ownership.
Then Nolan:
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
Good.
Edith:
“I don’t know if I forgive.”
Also good.
“But I love you.”
He sobbed.
She didn’t hug initially.
Later maybe touched hand.
Boundaries.
The son became investigation target because he was not passive.
Edith’s narrative changed:
Serena cruel.
Nolan victim?
No.
Both.
