Chapter 13 - The Passport With Emma’s NameThe passport was fake.

Professionally made, according to investigators.

Emma’s photograph.

Emma’s name.

Different identification number.

Claire felt physically ill when she saw the evidence photograph.

Richard insisted he had not planned to abduct his daughter.

He claimed someone else arranged the document as part of an “emergency family escape plan” because Victor Kane threatened them.

Rebecca did not allow Claire to rely on emotion.

“What matters is what can be proved.”

Investigators found searches on Richard’s phone.

Countries with limited extradition cooperation.

Private schools abroad.

Residency requirements.

Travel documents for minors.

Can one parent leave U.S. with child during divorce?

Claire stared at that final search.

She remembered Emma’s words.

Please don’t leave me here with Dad.

Richard had filed for custody publicly.

Privately, he had investigated taking Emma beyond Claire’s reach.

His temporary custody request collapsed.

Any contact would now require strict judicial review and supervision.

Claire expected to feel victorious.

Instead she sat in her parked car and cried.

This wasn’t winning.

Winning would have been Richard becoming the father Emma deserved.

Winning would have been never needing a courtroom.

Never photographing a slap mark.

Never finding hidden cameras.

Never explaining to a ten-year-old why love did not excuse fear.

The divorce moved forward.

Richard faced separate investigations involving alleged fraud, forged documents, investor funds, and the old Harbor Point records.

Victor’s loan complicated everything.

But Claire finally had one clear priority.

Emma.

She sold two investment properties to stabilize her own finances.

The house became entangled in legal claims, but Rebecca fought to protect Claire’s share.

Susan moved nearby temporarily.

Nora found a new job after providing evidence.

Madeline entered negotiations through her attorney concerning her cooperation.

Everyone Richard had once controlled began stepping away.

Then he requested a supervised call with Emma.

Claire discussed it with Hannah.

“What does Emma want?”

That was the question.

Not what Claire wanted.

Not what Richard wanted.

Emma.

When asked, Emma became quiet.

“Will he get mad if I say no?”

Claire’s heart hurt.

“No.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

Emma thought.

“I want to ask him one thing.”

So a supervised video call was arranged.

Claire sat nearby but outside Emma’s direct line of sight.

A court-approved professional monitored.

Richard appeared on screen from a secure setting.

He looked thinner.

Older.

When he saw Emma, his face broke.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

Emma stared at him.

“Hi.”

“I miss you.”

She said nothing.

Richard swallowed.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma’s fingers tightened around her stuffed rabbit.

“For what?”

Richard paused.

“For scaring you.”

Emma looked at Hannah.

Then back.

“And hitting me?”

“Yes.”

“And making me clean when I was sick?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“And making me lie?”

His face changed.

“Emma, sometimes adults—”

The supervisor interrupted.

“Answer her question directly.”

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.”

Emma nodded slowly.

Then she asked the question she had prepared.

“Why did you care more about the plates than me?”

Richard froze.

Claire covered her mouth.

No courtroom question could have been more devastating.

Richard struggled.

“I didn’t.”

“It felt like you did.”

“I was angry.”

“You’re always angry.”

Richard’s eyes filled.

“Not always.”

Emma looked at him with a sadness too old for ten.

“You were nice when Mom was there.”

Richard said nothing.

There it was.

The simplest truth.

He had known enough to behave differently when watched by the person whose opinion mattered.

Except he hadn’t realized his own cameras were watching too.

Emma continued.

“I don’t want to see you for a while.”

Richard looked shattered.

“Emma—”

“I’m scared of you.”

His face went still.

The call supervisor ended the session shortly afterward.

Emma walked directly into Claire’s arms.

“Was I mean?”

“No.”

“Dad looked sad.”

“You’re allowed to tell the truth even if the truth makes someone sad.”

Emma nodded.

That night she slept peacefully.

Claire did not.

Richard’s expression haunted her.

For one dangerous moment she pitied him.

Then she remembered pity had kept her trapped for years.

The next morning Rebecca called.

“Richard wants to make a deal.”

“What kind?”

“He is offering full financial disclosure and no contest on custody.”

Claire sat down.

“In exchange for what?”

Rebecca paused.

“He wants you to withdraw something.”

“What?”

“The allegation concerning the staircase.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“Why that?”

“I wondered the same thing.”

Claire immediately understood.

The kitchen slap was recorded.

The money had documents.

The forged signatures could be analyzed.

But the staircase?

Only Emma saw what happened.

May you like

Richard was disproportionately desperate to erase that event.

Which meant there was probably something about that night Claire still didn’t know.
