Chapter 5 - The Mistress Who Was Afraid of Him TooPolice separated everyone.

Claire stayed inside with Emma while officers spoke to Richard and Madeline.

Richard immediately transformed.

His anger disappeared.

His shoulders relaxed.

His voice became controlled.

He told police there had been “a stressful marital disagreement.”

He admitted slapping Emma but described it as “one regrettable moment of discipline.”

He pointed out that Claire had slapped him too.

Claire expected that.

Rebecca had warned her.

“What you did may be understandable in context,” the attorney had said, “but don’t pretend it didn’t happen. Richard will use any inconsistency against you.”

So Claire told the truth.

“Yes, I struck him after seeing my sick daughter crying on the floor with his handprint across her face.”

The officer documented everything.

Emma spoke with a female officer while Claire remained nearby.

The child described washing dishes because Dad told her to.

She described dropping the plates accidentally.

Then something Claire hadn’t known.

“Dad said I couldn’t go back to bed until the kitchen was clean.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Her daughter had been punished for being sick.

Richard eventually left voluntarily after officers strongly suggested separation while the incident was reviewed.

Madeline left with him.

But two hours later, Claire received a text.

Unknown number.

MADELINE: I need to talk without Richard.

Claire forwarded it to Rebecca.

The attorney arranged a meeting at her office the next morning.

Madeline arrived wearing oversized sunglasses.

She removed them after sitting down.

Her eyes were swollen.

Claire folded her arms.

“You slept with my husband.”

Madeline looked down.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Ten months.”

Claire absorbed the number.

Ten months of lies.

Ten months of Richard coming home.

Eating dinner.

Kissing Emma goodnight.

Getting into Claire’s bed.

She pushed the thought away.

“Why are you here?”

Madeline placed a flash drive on the table.

“Because Richard is going to destroy me if I don’t protect myself.”

Claire laughed without humor.

“So this is self-preservation.”

“Yes.”

At least she was honest.

Rebecca spoke.

“What’s on the drive?”

“Financial records.”

Claire stared.

“You helped him.”

“Some transfers, yes.”

“How much?”

Madeline hesitated.

“Almost six hundred thousand.”

Claire’s breath caught.

Madeline continued quickly.

“I believed it was his money.”

“You believed a married man secretly moving six hundred thousand dollars through your company was normal?”

“No.”

“Then what did you believe?”

Madeline’s face tightened with shame.

“That his marriage was already over.”

Claire looked at her.

“He told me you hadn’t been a real couple in years. He said you stayed together only because of Emma.”

“He told me last month he wanted us to renew our vows.”

Madeline flinched.

Good.

Claire wanted at least one truth to hurt.

“He lied to both of us,” Madeline whispered.

“Don’t compare us.”

“I’m not.”

Rebecca redirected the conversation.

“What exactly did Richard ask you to do?”

Madeline explained.

Richard’s real-estate development company had been losing money for nearly two years.

Instead of admitting it, he borrowed against assets and shifted funds to conceal losses.

Then he began moving marital money.

“Why?”

Claire asked.

Madeline looked at her.

“Because he knew you were suspicious.”

“How?”

“He hired someone.”

Claire went still.

“What?”

“A private investigator.”

Rebecca immediately began writing.

“To follow Claire?”

“Yes.”

Claire felt violated.

“How long?”

“About a month.”

That explained how Richard knew she had visited a divorce attorney.

Madeline continued.

“He saw you go into Rebecca’s building.”

Claire looked at her attorney.

“So that’s when he accelerated the transfers.”

Madeline nodded.

“He believed you were preparing to leave.”

“And instead of talking to me, he planned to empty our accounts.”

“Yes.”

Claire sat back.

Richard had been preparing for war before she even decided there would be one.

“What about Emma?”

Madeline closed her eyes.

“That part made me sick.”

“What part?”

“He said if you filed, he’d demand fifty-fifty custody immediately.”

“He barely spends time with her.”

“I told him that.”

“What did he say?”

Madeline hesitated.

Claire leaned forward.

“What did he say?”

“That you would give up money to keep Emma.”

The room became silent.

Rebecca stopped writing.

Claire heard Richard’s text again in her mind.

Leverage.

Madeline looked ashamed.

“I should have walked away then.”

“Yes,” Claire said.

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because by then I was financially involved.”

Claire suddenly understood.

Richard had not simply taken a mistress.

He had created an accomplice.

Madeline reached into her handbag.

“There’s something else.”

She removed her phone.

“I started recording him last week.”

Rebecca raised an eyebrow.

Madeline tapped a file.

Richard’s voice filled the room.

“If Claire gets aggressive, I’ll say she’s unstable. Susan already thinks she overreacts.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

Susan.

Her mother.

Richard continued on the recording.

“If I push custody hard enough, Claire will settle.”

Madeline’s recorded voice responded.

“And Emma?”

Richard laughed.

“She’s ten. She’ll adjust.”

Claire’s hands curled into fists beneath the table.

Then Richard said something worse.

“If Claire doesn’t cooperate, I’ll make sure everyone thinks she’s the dangerous parent.”

The recording ended.

Claire stared at Madeline.

“Who exactly is ‘everyone’?”

Madeline looked away.

“Your mother, for one.”

Claire’s blood went cold.

Richard had not only prepared his money.

May you like

He had prepared witnesses.

And apparently, one of them was already inside Claire’s own family.
