Chapter 1 - It’s My Birthday TooThe living room looked as if someone had spent a fortune making two seven-year-olds feel special.

Gold and white balloons floated beneath the high ceiling.

A three-tier birthday cake sat in the center of a polished table.

Two names were written across the frosting.

COLIN & MAISIE — HAPPY 7TH BIRTHDAY

Maisie stood beside her twin brother with a bright smile.

For the first few minutes, everything really did feel shared.

Then their father, Daniel Whitmore, carried one large wrapped box into the room.

Only one.

Maisie noticed.

But she did not worry.

There was probably another gift somewhere.

Her mother, Rebecca, smiled as Daniel placed the package in front of Colin.

“Go ahead.”

Colin ripped the paper open.

His eyes widened.

Inside was an expensive electronic racing system he had talked about for months.

“Whoa!”

He lifted the box.

“Thank you!”

Rebecca laughed.

Daniel smiled.

Gloria Whitmore, their paternal grandmother, stepped closer and put one hand proudly on Colin’s shoulder.

“I knew you’d love it.”

Colin immediately began opening the package.

Maisie smiled with him.

She genuinely did.

Watching her brother happy made her happy.

Then she glanced beneath the table.

Nothing.

She looked toward the fireplace.

Nothing.

Behind the sofa.

No second box.

Her smile slowly faded.

Maybe hers was smaller.

Maybe Mom had hidden it.

Maybe—

“Dad?”

Daniel looked up.

Maisie clasped her hands in front of her.

“Where’s my present?”

Silence.

Daniel’s expression changed.

He opened his mouth.

Maisie added softly:

“It’s my birthday too…”

Before Daniel could answer, Gloria turned.

The warmth vanished from her face.

“This year, we’re celebrating your brother.”

Maisie blinked.

Gloria continued in the same tone someone might use to discuss the weather.

“We’ll get you something next year.”

Maisie stared at her.

For one second, she thought Gloria might smile.

Maybe it was a joke.

She didn’t.

Maisie looked at Daniel.

Her father said nothing.

Then Rebecca.

Nothing.

Colin was still examining his new racing system, unaware of how deeply the room had changed for his sister.

Maisie’s lower lip trembled.

She pressed it still.

“Oh.”

That was all she said.

A few minutes later, she stood alone near the far end of the living room.

Nobody had told her to go there.

She had simply moved away.

Across the room, Colin sat between Daniel and Rebecca while Gloria showed him how to hold the controller.

Rebecca raised her phone.

“Look at Grandma, Colin.”

Flash.

Everyone laughed.

Another photograph.

Maisie watched.

Nobody turned toward her.

The cake still had both names on it.

That somehow made it worse.

Her eyes filled.

She refused to let the tears fall.

A few minutes later, the family moved toward the dining room.

Maisie remained behind.

She thought she was alone.

Then she heard Gloria’s voice in the hallway.

“She’ll get over it.”

Daniel answered quietly.

“She asked me where her present was.”

“She’s seven.”

“That doesn’t mean she doesn’t understand.”

Gloria sounded irritated.

“You need to stop making everything emotional.”

Rebecca spoke next.

“It was cruel, Gloria.”

Maisie’s eyes widened.

Her mother knew.

Gloria lowered her voice.

“You’re both living in a house my family paid for while Daniel’s company survives because I continue supporting it. I asked for one thing.”

“One thing?” Rebecca whispered.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Colin needs to understand his position in this family.”

Daniel sighed.

“He’s seven.”

“He is also the grandson carrying Arthur’s name forward.”

Maisie frowned.

Arthur had been their grandfather.

He died when they were four.

She barely remembered him.

Rebecca said, “Maisie is his granddaughter too.”

Gloria’s answer came immediately.

“Not in the same way.”

Maisie stopped breathing.

Daniel said nothing.

That silence hurt more than Gloria’s words.

Maisie backed away before anyone saw her.

She went upstairs and closed her bedroom door.

For the first time, she allowed herself to cry.

Not loudly.

Just silent tears against her pillow.

A few minutes later, someone knocked.

“Maisie?”

Colin.

She wiped her face.

“What?”

He opened the door.

His new controller was in his hands.

“Want to play?”

Maisie stared at him.

He looked genuinely confused.

“You can use it first.”

She almost said no.

Then she realized Colin had no idea what he had been given besides a toy.

He didn’t know what Grandma had said.

He didn’t know about Arthur.

He didn’t know what “position” meant.

Maisie sat up.

“Colin?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you know why Grandma only gave you a present?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

Neither of them noticed Rebecca standing just beyond the partially open door.

She had heard the question.

And for the first time that afternoon, shame appeared fully on her face.

May you like

Because Rebecca knew the birthday gift was not the first time Gloria had treated the twins differently.

It was simply the first time Maisie was old enough to ask why.
