Chapter 13 - The Birthday Gloria Almost MissesGloria arrived early.

She carried nothing.
Daniel noticed immediately.
So did Maisie.
For one uncomfortable second, the old birthday returned.
Then Gloria said:
“I didn’t bring gifts.”
Maisie’s face changed.
Gloria continued quickly:
“Your parents told me they had already chosen your presents. I didn’t want to make the day about what I bought.”
Rebecca looked surprised.
That was… reasonable.
Colin whispered to Maisie:
“She is learning.”
Maisie elbowed him.
The party was smaller than the year before.
No giant ballroom-like living room.
No professional decorations.
Just balloons taped to the wall.
A homemade cake.
Neighbors.
A few school friends.
Pepper wearing a ridiculous birthday hat.
Maisie seemed happier than she had in the mansion.
Gloria stood near the kitchen watching.
Daniel approached.
“You okay?”
“I’m not used to being invited to something I don’t control.”
He almost laughed.
“At least you know.”
She looked toward Maisie.
“Does she still think I hate her?”
“I don’t think she ever thought that.”
“Worse?”
Daniel nodded.
“She thought you loved Colin more.”
Gloria swallowed.
“I did treat him like I did.”
“Yes.”
“I thought giving him more prepared him.”
“For what?”
“Responsibility.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You gave him privilege and called it responsibility.”
Gloria almost argued.
Then stopped.
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at her.
That was new too.
When it was time for gifts, Maisie and Colin sat beside each other.
Rebecca handed Colin a box.
Daniel handed Maisie one.
Gloria stayed several feet away.
No interference.
Colin opened his first.
A programmable robotics kit.
“YES!”
Everyone laughed.
Maisie smiled.
Then looked down at her own box.
Her hands paused.
Daniel saw it.
The memory was there.
Last year she had waited after Colin opened his gift.
Waited for something that never came.
Now the box rested directly in her lap.
“Go ahead,” Rebecca whispered.
Maisie opened it.
A telescope.
For several seconds, she simply stared.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Really?”
“Really.”
She threw her arms around him.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Gloria looked away because she was crying.
Maisie noticed.
After the party, the twins carried their gifts toward their bedrooms.
Gloria prepared to leave.
Maisie approached.
“Grandma?”
Gloria turned.
“Yes?”
“You didn’t bring anything.”
“No.”
“That was okay.”
Gloria smiled through tears.
“Thank you.”
Maisie looked at her.
Then opened her arms.
Gloria froze.
“Are you sure?”
Maisie nodded.
Gloria hugged her gently.
Not tightly.
Not possessively.
She let Maisie determine when it ended.
After three seconds, Maisie stepped away.
Gloria immediately released her.
Daniel watched from the kitchen.
It was a small thing.
To anyone else, meaningless.
To him, enormous.
Gloria was learning that love did not mean holding until the other person stopped resisting.
That night Maisie and Daniel assembled the telescope in the backyard.
Colin joined them.
Rebecca brought hot chocolate.
They found the moon first.
Maisie looked through the eyepiece.
“Whoa.”
Colin bounced impatiently.
“My turn.”
Maisie moved aside.
“Equal treatment.”
Colin rolled his eyes.
“You say that every time.”
“Because it works.”
Daniel laughed.
Later, when both children were asleep, Rebecca sat beside him on the porch.
“You know what scares me?”
“What?”
“How normal last year’s birthday felt to everyone except Maisie.”
Daniel nodded.
“That’s how families get away with things.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“What?”
“When something happens slowly enough, everyone adjusts except the person it hurts.”
Daniel thought of Gloria.
Then himself.
Then Rebecca.
Silence had not begun on the seventh birthday.
It had been built through years of smaller moments.
The seventh birthday merely made it impossible to ignore.
Rebecca leaned against him.
“We almost missed it.”
Daniel looked through the window toward Maisie’s room.
“But we didn’t.”
Not completely.
There were still consequences.
Still damage.
Still things Maisie remembered.

But this time, when Colin opened a gift—
nobody forgot that his twin was sitting beside him.
