WHEN THE SWALLOW CAME HOME / Chapter 20 / 25

Chapter 20 - THE SECOND CHANCEVale was indicted on multiple federal and state charges.

Keane’s cooperation strengthened the case.

Arthur Knox’s documents provided corroboration.

The old marina tape changed everything surrounding Margaret Fenwick’s death.

For the first time in decades, Elena stopped moving.

She rented an apartment.

Not a motel.

An apartment.

Ruby chose the bedroom with the biggest window.

Damon helped carry furniture upstairs.

At one point Elena handed him a lamp.

“You know this is weird.”

“What?”

“You doing domestic things.”

“I’m excellent at lamps.”

“You once lived six months without curtains.”

“Curtains are unnecessary fabric.”

Ruby shouted from the other room:

“I want curtains!”

Damon sighed.

“I’ve been overruled.”

There were still legal questions about custody.

Damon was now confirmed as Ruby’s biological father.

He filed for formal parental recognition.

Elena supported it.

They agreed on a gradual schedule rather than turning Ruby’s life upside down again.

But Ruby quickly manipulated both parents into eating dinner together almost every night.

One Thursday she asked:

“Are you two dating?”

Damon nearly dropped his fork.

Elena coughed.

“No.”

Ruby frowned.

“Why?”

“Because adult relationships are complicated,” Elena said.

Ruby pointed between them.

“You already have a child together. Seems pretty advanced.”

Damon laughed so hard he had to leave the table.

Later, Elena stood at the sink.

“You know she’s going to keep asking.”

“I know.”

“Do you want that?”

Damon understood the question.

Not dating.

Them.

Again.

He took his time.

“I don’t want the relationship we had.”

Elena’s face fell slightly.

Damon continued.

“We were kids.”

“Yes.”

“I want to know who you are now.”

Elena turned toward him.

“And if you don’t like her?”

“Then we still raise Ruby.”

“And if you do?”

Damon smiled faintly.

“Then we’ll have another complicated conversation.”

Elena smiled back.

They began slowly.

Coffee.

Walks.

No promises about forever.

No pretending nine years had not happened.

Ruby noticed immediately.

“You’re dating.”

“We had coffee,” Damon said.

“Dating.”

“We discussed school pickup.”

“Boring dating.”

Elena laughed.

Ruby’s laughter followed.

The apartment began sounding like a home.

One evening, Ruby came downstairs holding the swallow necklace.

“The clasp is broken.”

Damon took it.

“I can fix it.”

Elena raised an eyebrow.

“You scratched it the last time you fixed it.”

“I was nineteen.”

“You’re not dramatically more qualified now.”

Ruby handed it to Damon anyway.

“Dad can do it.”

The word stopped him.

Dad.

She had called him Damon for weeks.

Not because she rejected him.

Because the new word felt too large.

Damon looked at Ruby.

She seemed unaware of what she had done.

Or pretended to be.

He swallowed.

“Yeah.”

He smiled.

“Dad can do it.”

Elena looked away to give him privacy with his emotions.

Ruby did not.

“Are you crying?”

“No.”

“You are.”

“Metal dust.”

“There’s no metal dust.”

“Go do homework.”

Ruby grinned.

That night Damon repaired the clasp carefully.

No new scratches.

Before giving it back, he opened the hidden compartment.

The paper with Martin Vale’s name was still there.

Ruby asked, “Do we need that anymore?”

Damon looked at Elena.

“No.”

Ruby removed the tiny paper.

She tore it in half.

Then half again.

“What should go inside instead?”

Elena thought.

Ruby already knew.

She wrote three names in tiny letters.

ELENA

DAMON

May you like

RUBY

Then folded the paper and placed it inside the swallow.
