Chapter 21 - THE TRIALThe criminal proceedings lasted months.

Ruby was kept away from most of them.
Elena testified.
Harold testified.
Maribel testified.
Damon testified about the motorcycle crash and his relationship with Elena.
Thomas Keane testified about Vale’s efforts to recover the ledger.
The defense attacked everyone.
Elena was called unstable.
Richard Fenwick was described as a convicted criminal.
Harold was accused of hiding evidence.
Maribel was portrayed as confused.
Damon was questioned about arrests from his early twenties.
He had two.
Both minor.
Both real.
Damon answered every question.
He refused to perform respectability for people who saw tattoos before character.
Outside court, reporters shouted:
“Mr. Voss, do you believe Vale tried to kill you?”
Damon kept walking.
“Mr. Voss, are you and Ms. Fenwick together?”
That one almost made him laugh.
At home Ruby asked what happened each day.
They told her the truth in age-appropriate pieces.
One evening she said:
“I hate Vale.”
Elena answered carefully.
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
“You hate him too?”
Elena thought for a long moment.
“I used to.”
“Not anymore?”
“I don’t want him deciding how I feel for the rest of my life.”
Ruby considered that.
Damon added, “Anger can protect you for a while.”
Elena looked at him.
He continued.
“But eventually you need somewhere else to live.”
Ruby nodded slowly.
“Can I still hope he goes to jail?”
“Absolutely,” Damon said.
Elena elbowed him.
“What?”
“I’m supporting civic engagement.”
The trial produced a mixed but substantial victory.
Vale was convicted on federal conspiracy, obstruction, financial crimes, and witness intimidation.
Separate proceedings concerning Margaret Fenwick’s death continued.
He faced decades in prison regardless.
When the verdict was read, Elena did not cheer.
She simply exhaled.
Outside the courthouse Damon found her sitting on stone steps.
“It’s over.”
“Part of it.”
“How do you feel?”
Elena stared at the street.
“Tired.”
Damon sat beside her.
She leaned against him.
No grand kiss.
No dramatic declaration.
Just weight shared between two people.
After several minutes, Elena asked:
“What happens now?”
“You go home.”
“With Ruby?”
“With Ruby.”
She looked at him.
“And you?”
Damon smiled.
“I have school pickup.”
Elena laughed.
That night Harold reopened Maple Corner Diner after closing it for the verdict.
Tessa came.
Maribel came.
Claire Benton came.
Agent Wren stopped by for twenty minutes.
Ruby sat in the same seat where Harold had once refused to feed her.
Harold placed an enormous plate of pancakes in front of her.
Ruby looked at him.
“How much?”
Harold smiled.
“Still free.”
Ruby cut into the pancakes.
Then she pushed half the plate toward Damon.
“Here.”
Damon stared at her.
“What?”
“You gave me your bread.”
His chest tightened.
“You remember that?”
“Obviously.”
Elena watched them.
The entire story had turned on a piece of bread.
One small act from a stranger who was not really a stranger.
Damon took a bite.
“Terrible pancakes.”
Harold pointed toward the door.
May you like
“Go somewhere else.”
Everyone laughed.
