Chapter 11 - Margaret Came Back With EvidenceMargaret was allowed to come to the house under controlled conditions.

Not because anyone trusted her.

Because Detective Morales wanted to hear what she claimed to have.

Ryan hated the idea.

Emily agreed to remain upstairs.

Margaret entered the living room at four in the afternoon carrying a folder.

She looked smaller than usual.

No jewelry.

Minimal makeup.

Styled silver hair still perfect.

Ryan realized presentation was part of his mother's armor.

Margaret sat opposite Eleanor.

Detective Morales remained near the doorway.

Rebecca sat beside Ryan.

"What did you bring?" Ryan asked.

Margaret looked toward the staircase.

"Where is Emily?"

"Not your concern."

"She's my daughter-in-law."

"You put something in her food."

Margaret's face tightened.

"I made a mistake."

"Stop calling it that."

Morales interrupted.

"Mrs. Carter, you said you had information relevant to the incident."

Margaret opened the folder.

She slid photographs across the table.

Ryan looked.

Emily with Eleanor at a bank.

Emily with Samuel Porter outside his office.

Emily photographing documents.

Ryan frowned.

"What is this supposed to prove?"

"She's been manipulating your grandmother."

Eleanor laughed.

Everyone turned.

Margaret stared at her.

"What's funny?"

"I'm seventy-two, Margaret. Not seven."

"You don't understand what she's doing."

"I asked Emily for help."

Margaret shook her head.

"After she convinced you money was missing."

"Money is missing."

"Because of investments Thomas approved."

Eleanor's face changed.

"Don't use my dead son."

"I'm telling you the truth."

Ryan leaned forward.

"Dad approved Lone Star?"

"Not Lone Star specifically."

"Then why say his name?"

"Because Thomas knew we had to invest aggressively."

Eleanor stared.

"Thomas told me before he died that you were losing money."

Margaret went still.

A tiny reaction.

But Ryan saw it.

"What?"

Eleanor looked toward her grandson.

"I never told you."

Ryan's voice was controlled.

"Told me what?"

"Your father came to me six weeks before his heart attack."

Margaret stood.

"Eleanor."

"Sit down."

The command shocked everyone.

Margaret sat.

Eleanor continued.

"He asked me never to lend you money."

Ryan stared.

Margaret's face hardened.

"He was angry."

"He was frightened."

"He was sick."

"He didn't know he was going to die."

Margaret looked away.

Ryan felt another part of his family history shifting.

"What was Mom doing?"

Eleanor answered.

"Borrowing."

"From who?"

"Friends. Banks. Private investors."

"Why?"

"Bad investments."

Margaret slammed one hand onto the chair.

"This has nothing to do with Emily."

"It has everything to do with why you needed money."

Margaret looked toward Detective Morales.

"I came here voluntarily. I don't have to sit through family accusations."

The detective remained calm.

"You may leave."

Margaret looked surprised.

Morales continued.

"But the interview concerning the food will continue through counsel."

Margaret sat again.

She pushed another paper toward Ryan.

"Look at this."

It was an email.

From Emily.

To Samuel Porter.

Subject:

PROTECTING ELEANOR'S ASSETS.

Ryan read.

Emily had written that Margaret's access should be suspended immediately pending review.

Margaret pointed.

"She wanted me removed before anyone proved anything."

Ryan looked at her.

"That seems reasonable now."

"Because she's poisoned you against me."

The wording made the room go silent.

Margaret realized too late.

Ryan stared.

"You might want a different metaphor."

Her face went pale.

Rebecca almost looked away.

Margaret took a breath.

"I didn't mean—"

Ryan held up a hand.

"Why did you put something in Emily's food?"

"For the hundredth time, I thought it was harmless."

"Why put anything in without telling her?"

Margaret said nothing.

Ryan leaned forward.

"Why that night?"

Silence.

"Why twenty-four hours before Grandma's attorney appointment?"

Margaret looked at Eleanor.

Eleanor stared back.

Finally Margaret whispered:

"I needed time."

Emily, listening from the hallway upstairs, stopped breathing.

Ryan did too.

"What?"

Margaret closed her eyes.

"I knew Eleanor was going to freeze the accounts."

"So you made Emily sick."

"I thought she'd have stomach cramps."

Ryan's face changed.

Margaret rushed on.

"I didn't know it could cause contractions."

"You knew she was pregnant."

"Of course."

"You told her to eat it for the baby."

Margaret covered her face.

"I panicked."

Ryan stood.

Detective Morales stepped slightly closer.

"Sit down, Ryan."

He did.

Barely.

"Time for what?" the detective asked Margaret.

Margaret didn't answer.

Morales repeated it.

"What did you need time to do?"

Margaret looked at the floor.

"Refinance."

Ryan stared.

"What?"

"Lone Star had a deadline."

"How much?"

Margaret's eyes filled.

"Two million dollars."

Eleanor whispered:

"You were going to take another two million from me."

Margaret looked at her.

"I was going to put everything back."

Emily heard the same logic criminals always seemed to find.

Temporary.

Just a loan.

I was going to replace it.

Eleanor shook her head.

"No."

Margaret started crying.

"If Lone Star survived, everyone got repaid."

"And if it didn't?"

Margaret had no answer.

Detective Morales stepped forward.

"Mrs. Carter, I need you to stand."

Margaret looked up.

"Why?"

"You're being taken into custody."

Ryan stopped breathing.

Margaret stared at her son.

"Ryan."

He looked away.

"Ryan, please."

She stood.

The detective placed her hands behind her back.

Margaret's composure finally shattered.

"Ryan!"

He didn't move.

Then Margaret said the one thing that made him turn.

"Your father knew."

Ryan stared.

Margaret's eyes were wild now.

"Thomas knew where the money came from."

Eleanor stood.

"Don't."

Margaret looked directly at Ryan.

"Ask your grandmother why your father changed his life insurance policy three days before he died."

Silence.

Ryan slowly looked at Eleanor.

Her face had gone white.

May you like

And for the first time—

Eleanor looked like she was hiding something too.
