Chapter 17 - Thomas Had Planned for GregoryThe agreement was twenty-four years old.

Old enough that Ryan initially assumed it would be useless.
Rebecca didn't.
"Do not assume age means unenforceable," she told him. "We need specialists to review it."
The document had been signed when Thomas Carter and Gregory Vale dissolved their first partnership.
Gregory had personally guaranteed certain liabilities connected to any future use of Carter-backed capital.
The language was dense.
But one phrase mattered.
ANY FUNDS DERIVED, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, FROM CARTER FAMILY TRUST ASSETS.
Emily stared at it.
"Lone Star used Eleanor's money."
"Yes," Rebecca said.
"Which came from Carter family trust assets."
"Potentially."
Ryan looked at his father's signature.
"Dad knew Gregory might come back."
Eleanor shook her head.
"Thomas knew Gregory never stopped looking for money."
The financial case expanded.
Gregory had not merely accepted Margaret's investments.
Emails showed he repeatedly pressured her.
Capital call.
Emergency deadline.
Bridge financing.
Default risk.
He knew she was running out of legitimate money.
Eventually, according to messages recovered from Margaret's phone, she told him where she was getting it.
ELEANOR DOESN'T CHECK THE ACCOUNT.
Gregory replied:
THEN DON'T GIVE HER A REASON TO.
Ryan read the message twice.
"He knew."
Rebecca nodded.
"Looks that way."
Emily felt anger rise.
Margaret remained responsible for everything she chose.
But Gregory had recognized her desperation and fed it.
When she said Eleanor was changing the power of attorney, Gregory's reply was even worse.
BUY THREE DAYS.
Three days.
Exactly what Margaret had tried to do.
Ryan looked up.
"Did he tell her to poison Emily?"
"No."
"Did he know how she planned to buy time?"
"We have no evidence."
That distinction mattered.
Emily refused to make Gregory responsible for Margaret's act without proof.
But he had created pressure.
Margaret had chosen the method.
Two different forms of guilt.
That afternoon, Detective Morales visited Emily at the hospital.
"Margaret has entered a formal cooperation agreement with investigators."
Ryan frowned.
"Meaning?"
"She is providing records regarding financial crimes. Food-tampering charges remain separate."
"Can she bargain those away?"
"That's up to prosecutors and courts. Cooperation does not automatically erase violent conduct."
Emily appreciated the bluntness.
"Has she asked to see Noah?"
"No."
Emily was surprised.
Morales continued.
"She specifically told her attorney she would not request contact unless you initiate it."
Ryan looked away.
Maybe that was remorse.
Maybe strategy.
It didn't matter yet.
Noah came home eleven days after birth.
Emily cried the entire drive.
Ryan drove like a ninety-year-old man.
"You're going thirty."
"Our son is in the car."
"The speed limit is forty-five."
"Our premature son."
Emily laughed.
At the Carter house, Eleanor had decorated nothing.
No balloons.
No huge welcome sign.
She knew Emily wanted quiet.
There was only a small blue ribbon tied around the porch light.
Emily loved it.
She carried Noah through the foyer.
Past the living room.
Toward the kitchen.
Then stopped.
The dining table was visible.
Her body remembered before her mind did.
Ryan noticed.
"We can go around."
Emily looked at the kitchen.
The chair.
The counter.
The trash bin.
The camera.
For days she'd imagined never entering that room again.
Then she looked down at Noah.
"No."
Ryan waited.
Emily walked into the kitchen.
Slowly.
She sat in the chair.
The same one.
Ryan looked worried.
"You don't have to."
"I know."
She held Noah against her chest.
The room was just a room.
Margaret had turned it into something terrible.
Emily refused to let her keep it.
Eleanor stood near the counter.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Coffee?"
Emily smiled.
"Decaf."
"Obviously."
Ryan sat beside her.
For a few minutes, nothing happened.
No secrets.
No screaming.
No ambulance.
Just a baby making tiny noises while three exhausted adults stared at him.
Then the doorbell rang.
Ryan checked the camera.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Emily asked.
He turned the phone.
Patricia Wells stood outside.
Margaret's friend.
The missing notary.
She had been released after questioning.
She held an envelope.
Ryan went to the door but did not open it.
"What do you want?"
Patricia spoke through the glass.
"I have something that belongs to Eleanor."
"What?"
"Margaret gave it to me months ago."
"Why bring it now?"
Patricia's face looked frightened.
"Because Gregory knows I have it."
Ryan stared.
"What is it?"
Patricia held up the envelope.
"Thomas Carter's original will."
Eleanor gasped behind him.
Ryan turned.
"Original?"
May you like
Patricia nodded.
"And Margaret has been lying about what it says for five years."
