Chapter 15 - Their Son Chose the Worst Possible Night to ArriveBy the time they reached the hospital, Emily's contractions were three minutes apart.

Ryan drove too fast.

Emily yelled at him to slow down.

"You cannot deliver this baby if we're dead!"

"I'm not going that fast."

"You're doing eighty!"

"Seventy-four."

"RYAN."

He slowed.

Eleanor sat in the back seat holding Emily's hospital bag.

"You two argue exactly like Thomas and Margaret used to."

Neither appreciated the comparison.

"Sorry," Eleanor muttered.

At the emergency entrance, nurses moved Emily into maternity triage.

Ryan stayed beside her.

The examination confirmed what Emily already feared.

Labor.

Not threatened labor.

Not irritation.

Actual labor.

"Can you stop it?" Ryan asked.

The obstetrician shook her head.

"At this point, delaying may not be appropriate."

Emily started crying.

"He's early."

"Yes."

"How early?"

"Just under thirty-four weeks."

"Will he breathe?"

"We have a neonatal team ready."

Emily grabbed Ryan.

"This happened because of her."

He knew who she meant.

Maybe the doctors could never prove a straight line from Margaret's tampering to labor two days later.

Stress.

Exposure.

Pregnancy itself.

Medicine didn't always offer courtroom certainty.

But emotionally, Emily knew exactly when her body had begun fighting.

At that dining table.

Ryan pressed his forehead to hers.

"I'm here."

"I don't want him to be born because of this."

"He won't be."

"What?"

"Our son is not going to belong to what she did."

Emily stared at him.

"He belongs to us."

That steadied her.

Hours blurred.

Pain.

Monitors.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Ryan's hand.

Emily screamed at him once.

Apologized.

Then screamed again.

He told her she could break every bone in his hand if necessary.

At 1:42 a.m., their son was born.

Too small.

Angry.

Beautiful.

For two terrifying seconds, he made no sound.

Emily stopped breathing.

Then he cried.

Not loudly.

But enough.

Ryan collapsed against the side of the bed.

"Oh my God."

Emily sobbed.

"Is he okay?"

The neonatal team moved quickly.

"He's breathing."

"Can I hold him?"

"Not yet."

Those words hurt.

The baby was taken to the NICU for support and observation.

Ryan followed long enough to see him settled.

Tiny chest moving.

Tiny fingers.

A knit cap almost too large for his head.

Ryan returned to Emily with tears streaming down his face.

"He's okay."

"Really?"

"He's tiny."

Emily laughed through tears.

"So were you."

"My mother said I was huge."

"Your mother lies."

The words escaped before Emily could stop them.

Silence.

Then Ryan laughed.

A broken, exhausted laugh.

Emily did too.

It was the first time Margaret's name had not poisoned the air completely.

They named their son Noah Thomas Carter.

Thomas for Ryan's father.

Not because Thomas had been perfect.

Because he'd tried, too late, to stop a pattern from reaching the next generation.

At six that morning, Eleanor met her great-grandson through NICU glass.

Her hand covered her mouth.

"He looks like Ryan."

Emily groaned.

"I did all that work."

Eleanor smiled.

Then her expression changed.

Ryan noticed.

"What?"

"I need to call Samuel."

"Now?"

"Yes."

"Grandma, Noah was born six hours ago."

"Exactly."

Emily remembered.

The trust.

The house.

Noah's birth triggered both.

Eleanor looked at Ryan.

"As of today, you become successor trustee."

Ryan's exhaustion disappeared.

"What does that mean right now?"

"It means Margaret loses whatever indirect access remained."

"Good."

"And the house moves into the generation trust."

Emily exhaled.

Margaret had failed.

Whatever else happened, she could no longer take the house.

Eleanor kissed Emily's forehead.

"Rest."

She left to make the call.

Ryan sat beside Emily.

For ten quiet minutes, they watched photographs of Noah on his phone.

Then Rebecca called.

Ryan almost ignored it.

Emily shook her head.

"Answer."

He did.

"Congratulations," Rebecca said.

"How did you know?"

"Eleanor."

"Of course."

"How's Emily?"

"Exhausted."

"I'm here."

Rebecca's voice softened.

"Congratulations, Emily."

"Thank you."

Then her tone changed.

"I wish I only had good news."

Ryan closed his eyes.

"What happened?"

"Gregory Vale filed for emergency bankruptcy protection for Lone Star."

Ryan frowned.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning recovering funds just became harder."

Emily's heart sank.

"How much harder?"

"We don't know."

Rebecca continued.

"But before filing, Lone Star made one transfer."

Ryan sat straighter.

"To who?"

"Margaret."

"How much?"

"Nine hundred thousand dollars."

Emily stared.

"When?"

"Three hours ago."

While Emily was in labor.

Ryan's face hardened.

"Where is the money now?"

"We don't know."

Margaret might have lost the house.

She might have lost access to Eleanor's trust.

May you like

But she had just received nearly a million dollars.

And nobody knew what she intended to do with it.
