Chapter 13 - WHAT GRAHAM WANTEDGraham confessed to the part that made him look terrible before evidence could make him look worse.

That was smart.

He asked to meet Miriam in person.

I watched remotely.

He did not know.

“I used Jason.”

Miriam said nothing.

“I knew Eleanor liked him.”

“You arranged that.”

“I arranged proximity.”

“Do you hear yourself?”

“Yes.”

Good.

Graham rubbed his face.

“I thought if she trusted someone outside family politics, he could explain restructuring without old resentment.”

“Old resentment meaning she disagreed with you.”

“Yes.”

“Did you pay him to influence her?”

“Yes.”

“Did he tell her?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because she would have stopped listening.”

There.

He understood consent to information would destroy influence.

That made it manipulation.

“Did you expect marriage?”

“No.”

“Did you support it?”

“At first, no.”

“Then?”

“I saw how happy she was.”

That answer surprised Miriam.

“And?”

“I stopped pushing him on the vote for a while.”

Evidence supported.

There was a four-month gap in messages.

Graham continued.

“Then Halcyon came.”

“And you started again.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because company debt worsened.”

“Did you know Jason had his own success fee?”

“No.”

“Did you know his financial problems?”

“Some.”

“Did you exploit them?”

“I offered legitimate work.”

“Answer.”

Graham looked down.

“Yes.”

“Did you ever say trustee would approve proxy?”

“I said Margaret follows documents.”

“Jason interpreted guarantee.”

“That was his interpretation.”

“Convenient.”

“Yes.”

Graham was tired of defending himself.

That made him more useful.

“Did you know final packet expanded proxy?”

“Yes.”

“Did Eleanor know?”

“I assumed Jason told her.”

Miriam laughed bitterly.

“That sentence should be engraved on every corporate scandal.”

Graham closed his eyes.

“Fair.”

“Why didn’t Helen review?”

“I thought she had.”

“Did you verify?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted it signed.”

There.

Not murder.

But intentional avoidance of inconvenient verification.

Miriam asked:

“What did you think would trigger it?”

“Medical event. Travel emergency.”

“Missing at sea?”

“I did not imagine that.”

“No one asked what you imagined.”

My line through her.

I smiled sadly.

Graham continued.

“When Jason came yesterday, I realized he expected me to force trustee.”

“Could you?”

“No.”

“Did you ever tell him you could?”

“I implied influence.”

“Why?”

“To keep him working.”

There.

Another person selling certainty he did not possess.

The whole crime had been built on people exaggerating control.

Graham implied trustee influence.

Adrian offered money.

Jason promised authority.

I trusted legal review that had not happened.

Colleen assumed counsel approval.

Each person leaned on another assumption.

Then one man turned assumptions into attempted murder.

Miriam asked:

“Do you think Jason loved Eleanor?”

Graham looked surprised.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he became less useful after he fell in love.”

I felt that through the screen.

He continued.

“He started arguing with me.”

“About?”

“Her.”

“Example?”

“I called her stubborn.”

“And?”

“He said she was usually right when everyone wanted her decision too quickly.”

I closed my eyes.

That sounded exactly like Jason.

Miriam asked:

“Then why would he kill her?”

Graham looked at the table.

“I don’t know.”

That was the first answer he gave I completely believed.

Because love does not make violence impossible.

It just makes motive less satisfying.

Graham continued.

“Maybe because loving her made him dependent too.”

Miriam frowned.

“What?”

“Jason hates dependence.”

Lauren said the same.

“He owed money. Halcyon owned his future. I had introduced him. Eleanor could destroy every plan by changing her mind.”

“So?”

“So perhaps he wanted something no one could revoke.”

Control what happens next.

The phrase again.

Then Graham said:

“I never wanted her dead.”

Miriam’s face hardened.

“That is a very low bar.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

He started crying.

I had seen Graham cry twice.

When Charles died.

When his daughter nearly lost a pregnancy.

This looked real.

Again.

Real emotion does not erase responsibility.

“I used someone’s private relationship as corporate leverage.”

He said it plainly.

“I told myself Eleanor was too sophisticated to be manipulated.”

Miriam said:

“That was how you excused manipulating her.”

“Yes.”

There.

I turned off the screen.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I had enough for that day.

Graham had not pushed me.

He may not have known.

But he built part of the road.

May you like

He would answer for the road.

Jason would answer for the cliff.
