Chapter 16 - WHY WE FLEW LOWERDaniel Kerr had flown helicopters for twenty-three years.

No serious incidents.

No connection to Jason beyond island contracts.

That relieved me.

One fewer accomplice.

He met investigators with his own counsel because pilots understand liability.

Flight data showed the descent.

Approved.

Within operational limits.

Jason requested it.

Reason:

Photography and reef view.

Daniel said:

“Mr. Vale asked if we could open the side door briefly.”

“Normal?”

“Possible under conditions.”

“Did Eleanor consent?”

“She seemed excited.”

I remembered laughing.

“Yes.”

“Did Jason ask anything unusual?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Everything sounds unusual afterward.”

Good answer.

“What did he ask before opening?”

“Whether we could circle back if her shawl fell.”

My skin tightened.

“And?”

“I said depending on position.”

“Anything else?”

“He asked, ‘At this height, if something fell, would you even see where it hit?’”

Silence.

“How did he frame it?”

“Her shawl.”

I looked at my missing white shawl in photographs.

He had built an innocent object into the question.

Preparation.

Or curiosity.

Again, sequence.

Daniel continued.

“Mrs. Whitmore was near doorway.”

“Did that concern you?”

“Yes.”

“I told them to stay within marked area.”

“Did Jason move her?”

“I could not see clearly.”

“After scream?”

“I heard it.”

“Then?”

“Jason shouted, ‘She slipped.’”

“How quickly?”

“Immediately.”

“What did you do?”

“Turned.”

“See?”

“Empty doorway. Jason on floor near opening.”

“Why floor?”

“He said he tried to grab her.”

I stared.

I remembered no grab.

Only push.

Could he have dropped intentionally to create that appearance?

Likely.

Daniel attempted immediate turn.

Jason shouted to descend.

Panic.

Then search protocol.

“Did Jason want you to land?”

“At first he said circle.”

“Then?”

“Return for more search support.”

Reasonable.

Investigators asked whether Jason interfered.

“No.”

Again.

He behaved like grieving husband afterward.

That could be performance.

Or shock.

Or planned cover.

Then flight audio.

Cabin noise limited.

But cockpit recording captured fragments.

Jason:

Closer.

My laughter.

Jason:

I love you so much.

Me:

I love you too.

Then:

Close your eyes.

Static.

My laugh.

Why?

I have a surprise.

Longer static.

I love you.

Goodbye.

My scream.

Then Jason:

Eleanor!

Then:

She slipped!

The prosecutor stopped playback.

I sat very still.

Hearing my own happiness before the push was worse than remembering it.

Miriam reached toward me.

I shook my head.

Not now.

The word goodbye mattered.

Defense could argue romantic joke?

Perhaps.

Not after what followed.

Preparation.

Statement.

Push.

False account.

Financial motive.

Documents.

Strong.

Then Daniel asked to speak to me directly.

“I’m sorry.”

I almost snapped.

Then saw his face.

He had replayed his choices too.

Opening door.

Descending.

Allowing photograph.

Normal operational decisions transformed afterward.

“Did you do anything outside procedure?”

He looked at counsel.

“Door-open period may have exceeded ideal.”

“Why?”

“I let the groom have another thirty seconds.”

There.

Human.

A wedding.

A request.

Social pressure.

“I should have closed it.”

“Would that have prevented?”

“Yes.”

He began crying.

I leaned back.

“Then learn from it.”

He looked at me.

“But do not make yourself the man who pushed me.”

Same lesson.

Responsibility is not a bucket everyone shares until full.

Each person carries their own.

May you like

Daniel’s thirty seconds mattered.

Jason’s hands mattered more.
