Chapter 17 - THE PILOT’S TWO MINUTESThe missing two minutes were not missing from recording.

They were missing from Daniel’s first memory.
Trauma does that.
He recalled later, after reviewing flight map, that Jason had asked him to fly one specific heading.
“Why?”
“Better light.”
“Who chose?”
“Jason.”
That heading placed us nearer a maritime corridor.
Which turned out to be why Miriam’s response vessel reached me quickly.
Irony.
Jason chose a route that improved his plan.
It also helped save me.
But why that heading?
The island photographer had suggested a different direction.
Jason overrode.
Investigators found he had viewed weather and current maps the night before.
Preparation again.
He searched:
survival time ocean water temperature.
That was devastating.
Also:
helicopter door photography California.
marine current drift.
missing person presumed death timeline spouse.
There.
Search history.
No ambiguity.
Miriam said:
“Now?”
“Yes.”
I finally allowed anger.
Not loud.
Cold.
He had researched how long I might live in water.
He knew.
Then pushed me anyway.
That removed the last romantic fog around accident.
Love, if present, had stood beside calculation.
Calculation won.
Another search:
temporary voting authority missing principal.
My body and corporate governance in adjacent browser tabs.
I laughed.
The prosecutor looked uncomfortable.
“Mrs. Whitmore?”
“I spent forty years telling men not to mix personal and business.”
Miriam almost laughed too.
Dark humor is still oxygen.
The search history strengthened premeditation.
What about accomplices?
No evidence anyone else searched harm.
Adrian’s communications remained aggressive but nonviolent.
Peter’s “J has solution” email became suspicious.
He explained:
Jason said Eleanor would sign proxy.
If true, solution meant documents.
That fit.
Adrian’s prepaid phone?
He denied ownership.
Investigation later connected procurement phone to his chief operating adviser, Victor Hale.
Victor admitted using burner channels for sensitive deal negotiations.
Ugly.
Potential compliance violations.
Did he know about murder?
No evidence.
His message:
Need certainty before departure.
He claimed certainty meant signature completion.
Again plausible.
Jason replied will be resolved.
And it was.
Maybe the corporate actors were guilty of corrupt influence but not violence.
That was increasingly likely.
Miriam hated it.
I did not.
One attempted murderer was enough.
We did not need a committee.
Then Graham provided a message he had not previously disclosed.
Why delay?
Shame.
Date: wedding morning.
Graham to Jason:
If Eleanor says no today, stop pushing. We’ll deal with vote without her.
Jason:
Easy for you.
Graham:
I mean it.
Jason:
You started this.
Graham:
And I’m telling you to back off.
That helped Graham substantially regarding intent.
It hurt him regarding earlier manipulation.
Miriam read twice.
“He tried to stop.”
“Yes.”
“Late.”
“Yes.”
“Does that matter?”
“Yes.”
She sighed.
I smiled.
“You’re learning.”
“I hate learning.”
“Family tradition.”
Then another message.
Jason did not reply to Graham.
Instead, he messaged Adrian:
G is getting cold feet.
Adrian:
G doesn’t control your agreement.
Jason:
Understood.
There.
Jason severed dependence on Graham.
Halcyon became direct incentive.
The scheme evolved.
What began as Graham’s unethical influence project became Jason’s separate financial operation.
And eventually his crime.
Responsibility changed over time.
Important.
The story was no longer:
Stepson hires young man to kill wealthy widow.
Too simple.
Too false.
It was:
Stepson hires young consultant to influence a family vote.
Consultant begins relationship.
Relationship becomes real.
Financial pressure grows.
Investor offers direct success fee.
Consultant promises authority.
Woman refuses.
Consultant chooses murder.
Systems create opportunity.
Individuals still choose escalation.
That was the truth.
Messier.
Stronger.
Then Nora arrived.
“Jason has requested to see Miriam.”
“Why?”
Miriam frowned.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“What does he want?”
“He says he has information about Graham.”
I looked at her.
Of course.
When control narrows, people trade secrets.
“Meet him.”
Miriam stared.
“Absolutely not alone.”
“No.”
May you like
I smiled.
“But let my husband believe there is still one Whitmore woman he can manipulate.”
