Chapter 16 - Rachel’s BoxRachel Kessler’s attorney called the next morning.

Rachel wanted immunity from civil claims in exchange for information.
Grace laughed when she heard.
“She’s frightened.”
“Should we meet?” Elise asked.
“Yes.”
Rachel arrived at Grace’s office carrying the same metal box seen on security footage.
She was thirty-four, composed and visibly exhausted.
Naomi joined by video with her attorney.
Rachel looked at Elise.
“I did not know Trevor was married when I met him.”
Elise said nothing.
“I found out later.”
“When?”
“About six months into our relationship.”
Naomi closed her eyes.
Rachel continued.
“I ended the personal relationship.”
“But kept working with him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He connected me to Calder Rowe.”
Rachel was helping identify redevelopment opportunities connected to Ward & Finch’s real estate portfolio.
Several showrooms sat on valuable land.
Trevor proposed selling the company, then separating certain properties for redevelopment.
Rachel would earn fees.
“Did you know about N.W. Creative?”
“Not initially.”
“When did you learn?”
“Two months ago.”
“What did Trevor tell you?”
“That it was a family consulting entity used to move money efficiently.”
Grace looked unimpressed.
“And you believed that?”
Rachel hesitated.
“No.”
Finally.
Another person choosing honesty too late.
Rachel opened the lockbox.
Inside were printed emails, a flash drive and a handwritten notebook.
“Trevor asked me to destroy these last week.”
Elise looked at her.
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because by then I knew I might be blamed.”
Naomi gave a humorless laugh through the screen.
“Welcome.”
Rachel ignored it.
The notebook contained Trevor’s meeting notes with Calder Rowe.
One entry stood out.
Need E compromised enough that board can act without appearing hostile to family legacy. Naomi issue may accelerate.
Elise stared.
“The affair was part of the governance plan.”
Rachel looked confused.
“What affair?”
Naomi answered.
“Mine.”
Rachel’s face changed.
She looked genuinely sick.
“He slept with you too?”
Naomi’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
Rachel whispered something under her breath.
Elise suddenly understood why Rachel had gone to the mansion.
“You came to return this.”
Rachel nodded.
“I thought Trevor might ask for it. I didn’t want it in my apartment.”
“Why didn’t you call?”
“I panicked.”
Grace examined the flash drive.
“Any idea what’s on this?”
“Presentation decks and recordings.”
Elise looked up.
“Recordings?”
“Trevor recorded some meetings.”
Grace’s eyes narrowed.
“Without consent?”
“I don’t know.”
The legal implications would depend on where and how recordings were made.
They did not need them if other evidence sufficed.
One recording, however, was of Trevor alone dictating notes.
His own voice.
No consent issue.
The date was four months earlier.
Trevor said:
“Naomi becoming emotionally dependent. Keep distinction between relationship and financial objective. She responds strongly when Elise framed as controlling.”
Naomi went completely still.
Rachel looked at the screen.
Naomi’s face had emptied.
Trevor’s recorded voice continued.
“If necessary, relationship can be disclosed later to create instability. E likely reacts personally and overreaches professionally.”
Elise felt a cold fury unlike anything before.
He had predicted the wardrobe moment.
Not literally.
But strategically.
He wanted the affair discovered eventually.
He believed Elise would lose control.
Make reckless decisions.
Give the board a reason to act.
Sunny had simply forced the discovery earlier than Trevor intended.
Naomi whispered, “He wrote me like a project.”
Elise looked at her sister.
“Yes.”
Grace stopped the audio.
No one needed more.
Rachel pushed the box toward Elise.
“I’m sorry.”
Elise shook her head.
“Stop saying that unless you’re prepared to accept what comes after.”
Rachel nodded.
“I am.”
That afternoon, investigators obtained copies.
Calder Rowe suspended all contact with Trevor and Ward & Finch pending review.
The proposed sale effectively died.
Trevor’s strategy was collapsing.
Then Grace received a call.
Her face changed.
“Elise.”
“What?”
“The executive authorization originals have been found.”
“Where?”
“Trevor’s attorney just delivered them to investigators.”
Elise exhaled.
Then Grace added:
“One page is missing.”
The page containing Cecilia’s original signature.
And without it, proving exactly how Trevor created the forged amendment would be much harder.
Unless they could find where he had hidden the original.
Naomi suddenly looked at Elise.
“The wardrobe.”
Elise frowned.
“What about it?”
“There was something else inside when I hid there.”
May you like
Naomi’s voice became urgent.
“A white envelope taped behind the hanging rail.”
