Chapter 19 - The Man Who RanTrevor’s car was found at the airport.

He had not boarded a commercial flight.

Investigators believed he used the location to create confusion.

His passport had been flagged.

Accounts were frozen.

His attorney claimed not to know where he was.

Elise did not believe that.

For two days, every unfamiliar engine near the mansion made her tense.

Security increased.

Sunny began sleeping outside her bedroom door.

Naomi stayed elsewhere under her attorney’s advice.

On the third morning, Elise received an email.

No subject.

One sentence.

Your mother knew what desperation makes people do.

It came from an encrypted service.

Grace told her not to respond.

Elise didn’t.

An hour later another arrived.

Ask Grace how much Cecilia paid Raymond Hale.

Elise forwarded it.

Grace frowned.

“We already disclosed the repayments.”

“He wants me distracted.”

“Yes.”

But the message bothered Elise.

She went back to old financial files.

Cecilia had indeed transferred $150,000 personally to Raymond months before his death.

Elise stared.

“Why?”

Grace did not know.

Adrian remembered Cecilia calling it a confidential settlement.

They found the agreement.

Raymond agreed to repay Ward & Finch for improper Silver Birch charges.

Cecilia’s personal payment covered Raymond’s medical expenses after the repayment depleted his savings.

Elise closed the file.

Her mother had held him accountable—

then helped him die with dignity.

Trevor had turned that compassion into another accusation.

Elise suddenly understood the email.

He wanted her to doubt Cecilia.

To doubt Grace.

To fracture every relationship the way he had fractured the sisters.

“I’m done following his questions,” Elise said.

Grace nodded.

That afternoon, Rachel provided investigators with a location Trevor had once used for private meetings.

A rented cabin two hours north.

Police found it empty.

But surveillance footage from a nearby gas station showed Trevor purchasing food.

The search narrowed.

Naomi called Elise.

“He contacted me.”

Elise stood.

“When?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

“What did he say?”

“He wants me to bring him cash.”

“Absolutely not.”

“I know.”

“Did you tell investigators?”

“They’re here.”

Naomi sounded strangely calm.

“He says if I help him, he’ll give me documents proving you stole from the trust.”

Elise closed her eyes.

Same lie.

Even now.

Naomi continued.

“I told him I don’t believe him anymore.”

“What did he say?”

“He said I’d come crawling back when you abandoned me.”

Elise felt something twist inside her.

“What did you say?”

Naomi was quiet.

“I said maybe you will abandon me.”

Elise waited.

“But that’s your choice. Not his weapon.”

Elise sat down slowly.

Naomi had finally separated consequence from manipulation.

Investigators arranged controlled communication.

Naomi did not meet Trevor.

She followed legal instructions.

His messages helped narrow his location.

That night, police found Trevor at a private rental property under a friend’s name.

There was no dramatic chase.

No gunfire.

No violence.

He was arrested in the driveway while carrying a duffel bag.

Inside were $41,000 in cash, two laptops and copies of Ward & Finch documents.

The arrest appeared on local news within hours.

FORMER WARD & FINCH FINANCE EXECUTIVE ARRESTED IN ALLEGED MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD.

Elise watched the television without sound.

The report did not mention Naomi yet.

It did mention Elise.

Trevor Hale, husband of controlling shareholder Elise Ward Hale.

She turned the television off.

Sunny rested his head on her knee.

For months, Trevor had believed exposure would destroy her.

Now the world knew.

And Elise was still sitting there.

The next morning, Grace called.

“Trevor’s lawyer wants to discuss a plea.”

“That fast?”

“He wants leverage before prosecutors finish analyzing the laptops.”

Elise looked toward the wardrobe.

“What’s on them?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Grace paused.

“But one device contains a folder named after you.”

Elise closed her eyes.

Of course it did.

“What’s it called?”

May you like

Grace answered.

EXIT ELISE.
