Chapter 17 - The Envelope Trevor ForgotThey returned to the mansion with investigators’ permission.

Elise had barely entered the bedroom since the discovery.
The wardrobe remained open.
Naomi stood in front of it for the first time since Elise had found her there.
She did not step inside.
“I saw Trevor reach behind the rail earlier that morning,” Naomi said.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I thought he was hiding cash.”
Elise stared at her.
“You keep remembering things at very convenient times.”
Naomi accepted the accusation.
“I know.”
An investigator examined the rear panel.
Nothing.
Then Sunny entered.
He sniffed.
Naomi almost smiled despite herself.
“He really does find everything.”
Sunny moved toward the left section and pushed his nose between two coats.
The investigator followed the line.
Behind a removable cedar strip, tape residue remained.
But the envelope was gone.
Elise’s hope collapsed.
“Trevor must have taken it.”
Naomi frowned.
“When?”
“He came back to the gate.”
“He never got inside.”
Everyone went silent.
Rachel had tried.
But security showed she never entered either.
Elise looked at household-access logs.
Staff.
Housekeeper.
Driver.
Landscaper.
One temporary maintenance contractor.
Grace asked, “Who serviced the bedroom recently?”
Elise remembered.
“The wardrobe company.”
A hinge had been adjusted two weeks earlier.
Trevor arranged it.
Investigators contacted the contractor.
The technician remembered something unusual.
Trevor had insisted the worker remove a cedar strip and reinstall it after Trevor placed “warranty paperwork” behind it.
The technician had taken a photo documenting the finished work.
In the image, the white envelope was visible for half a second before the strip covered it.
The contractor also remembered Trevor calling three days later and asking if anyone else had seen the compartment.
Grace stared at the image.
“At least we can prove he used the hiding place.”
“But not what was inside.”
Naomi suddenly spoke.
“I touched the envelope.”
Elise looked at her.
“When?”
“Yesterday. Before you came home.”
The room went silent.
Naomi stared at the wardrobe.
“Trevor told me to take the executive authorization envelope from the safe.”
“Yes.”
“He gave me the key.”
“Yes.”
“I took the blue envelope.”
Elise waited.
“Then he opened it.”
Naomi’s breathing became shallow.
“He removed one page.”
Elise stepped closer.
“The signature page.”
“I think so.”
“What did he do with it?”
“He put it in the white envelope.”
“And hid it behind the rail?”
Naomi nodded.
“Then why is it gone?”
Naomi looked toward the floor.
“Because after you came home… when he told me to get into the wardrobe…”
Her face changed.
“I knocked something down.”
Elise stared.
“What?”
“I heard paper fall.”
Naomi slowly crouched.
The investigator shone a light beneath the built-in unit.
There was only a narrow gap.
Too small for a hand.
They removed the lower trim.
Dust.
A hairpin.
A button.
Then a white envelope.
Elise stopped breathing.
The investigator used gloves.
The envelope contained one original document page.
Cecilia Ward’s signature.
And something unexpected.
A handwritten note on the back.
Three lines in Cecilia’s handwriting.
Trevor asked again about voting control.
Do not give him authority over treasury.
Elise trusts him. That may become dangerous.
Elise stared.
Her mother had written it before she knew she was dying.
Before Trevor and Elise dated.
Cecilia had seen the danger.
She had tried to contain it.
And Trevor had hidden the warning inside the same wardrobe where he later hid Naomi.
Grace closed her eyes.
“This may be the cleanest evidence yet.”
The original page matched the authentic amendment.
The forged version altered the language but reused Cecilia’s signature.
Document examination could now establish fabrication far more convincingly.
Naomi looked at Elise.
“I’m sorry.”
Elise did not answer.
Naomi looked at the note.
“She tried to warn you.”
“No.”
Elise’s voice was soft.
“She tried to protect me without telling me the truth.”
She turned toward Grace.
“That ends now.”
No more protected secrets.
No more quiet mercy.
No more decisions made in dark rooms because someone feared embarrassment.
Elise looked at investigators.
“Use everything.”
That evening, Trevor was formally notified that investigators were seeking warrants for several accounts and devices.
His attorney requested another meeting.
Grace declined.
At 11:17 p.m., Trevor sent Elise one final personal message.
If I go down, Naomi goes with me.
Elise stared at it.
Then forwarded it to investigators.
May you like
For the first time, Trevor’s threats were no longer private.
And he had just made the mistake of putting one in writing.
