Chapter 13 - What Natalie KnewHelena stood in the foyer alone.

No attorney.
No daughter.
That made Adrian suspicious.
“What are you doing here?”
“Finishing something.”
“You can finish it through Rebecca.”
“This isn’t about the settlement.”
Adrian looked toward the stairs.
Eli was asleep.
Rosa remained nearby.
Adrian did not invite Helena farther inside.
“Talk.”
Helena held an old folder.
“Natalie believed I was paying Graham for access.”
“Were you?”
“Not then.”
Adrian stared.
Helena continued.
“I was trying to establish a fund.”
“The Mercer Land Fund partnership.”
“Yes.”
“Natalie rejected it.”
“She humiliated me.”
“By saying no?”
“By telling Graham I lacked institutional experience.”
“Was she wrong?”
Helena’s lips tightened.
“No.”
That surprised him.
“She was right professionally,” Helena said. “I hated her for being right.”
Adrian waited.
Helena handed him the folder.
Inside were early fund proposals.
Natalie’s notes.
And a letter Adrian had never seen.
Helena,
Your project may become viable with independent management and transparent fees. I am not against you because you are Monica’s mother or because you are an outsider. I am against presenting family access as governance.
Adrian stared.
Natalie had offered Helena a path forward.
Independent management.
Transparent fees.
Helena rejected it.
“Why?”
Helena laughed bitterly.
“Because I wanted Mercer to need me.”
Adrian looked up.
There it was.
The same disease.
Need.
Control.
Helena continued.
“Natalie said something to me at our last meeting.”
“What?”
“She said if I could not distinguish being welcomed from being entitled, I would eventually destroy every relationship I entered.”
Adrian felt grief rise.
Natalie had been gone for years and still seemed to understand the present.
“Why tell me now?”
Helena’s composure cracked slightly.
“Monica won’t speak to me.”
Adrian said nothing.
“She says I taught her to treat love like competition.”
“Did you?”
Helena’s eyes filled.
“I taught her never to be powerless.”
“That wasn’t the question.”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
The answer was quiet.
Adrian looked at the woman who had defended her daughter in the foyer.
“What you said about Eli.”
Helena’s expression shifted.
“That he wasn’t related to Monica by blood.”
“Yes.”
“I was protecting my daughter.”
“No. You were justifying cruelty.”
Helena looked away.
“I know that now.”
Adrian did not feel satisfaction.
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
“Would you say it if Monica still agreed with you?”
Helena flinched.
That question stayed unanswered.
Adrian held out the folder.
“You should give this to counsel.”
“Keep it.”
“Why?”
“It belonged to Natalie.”
Helena turned to leave.
At the door, Adrian asked:
“Did you arrange Monica meeting me?”
Helena stopped.
“Yes.”
“Did Monica know?”
“She knew I wanted you two to meet. She did not know why I knew so much about you.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Did you expect her to marry me?”
“I hoped.”
“For her?”
Helena turned.
“At first, for both of us.”
“Meaning?”
“I thought she would be happy. And I thought if she became part of Mercer, eventually your company might see me differently.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Did you ever tell her that?”
“No.”
“Then you used your daughter too.”
Helena’s face changed.
That was the sentence that reached her.
Not money.
Not the fund.
Monica.
“You used her marriage as access.”
Helena whispered, “Yes.”
Then she left.
Adrian stood in the foyer.
For months, he had been uncovering layers.
But there was no hidden murder.
No secret child.
No impossible conspiracy.
Only people who wanted love, status, security, and control—and kept choosing dishonest ways to get them.
That was enough to destroy a family.
Upstairs, Eli woke crying.
Adrian ran to him.
“Daddy!”
“I’m here.”
He lifted him.
Eli clung tightly for a moment.
Then pointed toward the floor.
“Down.”
Adrian smiled.
“You want down?”
“Down.”
He placed Eli on the carpet.
The toddler immediately ran toward his toys.
Adrian watched him.
A child could need his father desperately one moment and want freedom the next.
Love did not require holding tighter.
Sometimes it required putting someone down when they asked.
Helena had never learned that.
May you like
Maybe Monica was beginning to.
Adrian intended to.
