Chapter 7 - Natalie’s Meeting With HelenaHelena tried to dismiss it.

“A charity luncheon.”

Adrian did not believe her.

Natalie had never mentioned Helena.

But Natalie had served on the board of a childhood-literacy nonprofit.

Helena had been a major donor.

Rebecca searched publicly available records.

They had attended at least three events together.

That alone meant nothing.

Then Rosa remembered something.

“Mrs. Natalie had an argument with a woman once.”

Adrian looked at her.

“When?”

“About a year before she became very ill.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did she look like?”

Rosa described Helena.

Elegant.

Silver-blond hair.

Very controlled voice.

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“Where?”

“In this house.”

He stared.

“Helena was here?”

“At the front door. Mrs. Natalie would not let her inside.”

“What did they say?”

Rosa heard only one sentence.

Natalie:

Stay away from my husband’s company.

Adrian sat down.

The financial scandal predated Monica.

That changed everything.

Rebecca warned him.

“Or Natalie misunderstood something. We need evidence.”

Adrian nodded.

No assumptions.

They searched Natalie’s surviving records.

Adrian had preserved her laptop and phone backups for Eli.

He did not want to rummage through a dead woman’s private life casually.

Rebecca recommended narrowly targeted forensic review for Helena’s name, Martin Vale, Vale Strategic, and Graham Pierce.

The results came the next day.

Natalie had emailed Helena.

You approached Graham again after I asked you not to. Adrian believes you are discussing nonprofit property. I know you are pitching him private redevelopment opportunities.

Helena replied:

You are overreacting.

Natalie:

No. You are trying to use social access to reach Mercer capital.

Adrian read the exchange twice.

Five years earlier.

Before Monica.

Before Eli was born.

Helena had been trying to build a relationship with Mercer Development.

Another email:

My husband will decide for himself what investments he wants. Do not use me as an introduction again.

Then silence.

Adrian looked at Rebecca.

“She knew me before Monica.”

“Yes.”

“Monica told me she met me randomly at that gallery opening.”

Rebecca said nothing.

Adrian called Monica.

“Did your mother know who I was before we met?”

Monica hesitated.

That hesitation answered.

“How much did she know?”

“She knew the Mercer name.”

“Did she encourage you to meet me?”

“No.”

“Monica.”

“She told me you would be at the gallery.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

The floor beneath his marriage shifted.

“Did she arrange it?”

“She knew the curator.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Monica started crying.

“I don’t know.”

“You never thought it was strange?”

“I thought she was matchmaking.”

“Did she tell you Natalie had confronted her?”

“No.”

That part sounded genuine.

Monica was discovering her own mother’s history in real time.

“Did you know Helena had tried to get Mercer Development into projects?”

“No.”

“Did you know Graham Pierce already knew her?”

“No.”

Adrian believed her more this time.

The manipulation might have started before Monica understood it.

That did not erase Monica’s later choices.

But it reframed the marriage.

Helena had seen Adrian as more than a husband for her daughter.

He was access.

Capital.

Influence.

Legacy.

Monica had fallen in love somewhere inside a setup she may not have fully understood.

Adrian suddenly felt exhausted.

Rebecca said, “Do not decide your entire marriage today.”

“I don’t know what was real.”

“Some of it probably was.”

“How is that better?”

“It’s more accurate.”

Again.

Accuracy instead of emotional simplicity.

At home, Eli climbed onto Adrian’s lap with a toy truck.

“Daddy.”

“Yes?”

“Mommy?”

Adrian’s throat tightened.

“Monica is staying somewhere else.”

Eli pointed toward the front door.

“Mommy come?”

“Not today.”

The toddler frowned.

Then returned to his truck.

Adrian wondered if Monica deserved eventual contact.

Not now.

Maybe never.

He did not know.

Then Rosa entered carrying mail.

One envelope was addressed by hand.

No return address.

Inside was a photocopy of an old note written by Natalie.

If Helena Vale ever becomes part of Adrian’s life, he needs to know she does not approach families accidentally.

Below that:

Ask Graham why she wanted access to the Mercer land fund.

Adrian stared.

Someone else had Natalie’s records.

And someone wanted him to keep digging.
