Chapter 15 - THE AUTHORIZATION SHE DIDN’T GIVE

Avery never authorized the original Rowe investment.

Not because she wanted them punished.

Because circumstances changed.

Daniel presented the investment committee with updated risks:

divorce.

family-governance instability.

borrower disclosure issues.

potential reputational complications.

The committee decided to withdraw unless terms improved.

Avery recused herself from the final investment vote.

That surprised Spencer when he learned.

“You didn’t stop it yourself?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Conflict.”

“But it was your trust.”

“Exactly.”

He stared.

Avery continued:

“I didn’t want my divorce to become an investment thesis.”

Spencer almost smiled.

“You always talk like that?”

“When nervous.”

“I remember.”

Silence.

They were at mediation again.

Spencer asked:

“Did you want to hurt us?”

“Yes.”

Avery’s honesty surprised him.

She continued.

“For about three days.”

“What stopped you?”

“Rebecca.”

Rebecca, across the table, raised a hand.

“Proudly unpopular.”

Avery almost smiled.

Then:

“I wanted to pull everything. Tell every lender. Make your mother feel small.”

Spencer looked down.

“But I didn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t want what you did to me to decide who I became next.”

Spencer swallowed.

The Rowes ultimately secured replacement financing.

Higher interest.

Sale of a peripheral asset.

Reduced distributions.

Painful.

Survivable.

Gloria called it Avery’s fault for months.

Then one day Spencer told her:

“No.”

“What?”

“We did not lose cheap financing because Avery attacked us.”

“We lost it after she withdrew.”

“She never committed.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

Spencer stared at his mother.

“You keep treating expected yes as property.”

Gloria went silent.

The sentence echoed through everything.

Marriage.

Money.

Family.

Avery’s time.

Avery’s labor.

Avery’s capital.

May you like

If Gloria expected yes, no felt like theft.

Spencer finally understood how dangerous that was.
