Chapter 19 - THE APOLOGY THAT CAME AFTER THE BALANCE SHEET

Flowers arrived.
White orchids.
Then handwritten notes.
Then calls.
Relatives who had been silent at brunch suddenly remembered Avery’s kindness.
Aunt Cynthia:
We all got caught up in the moment.
Uncle Martin:
Spencer has always had a temper but he loves you.
Cousin Wesley:
Family shouldn’t end over one bad morning.
Brooke was the only one who did not pressure.
She texted:
I’m sorry I didn’t speak sooner. You don’t owe me a response.
Avery replied:
Thank you for telling the truth.
The rest felt different.
Especially after news spread quietly that Avery came from “more money than expected.”
Avery told Rebecca:
“If I were still broke in their minds, none of these flowers would exist.”
Rebecca said:
“Probably.”
“I hate that.”
“Good.”
“Why good?”
“Because now you know which apology is about you and which is about revised hierarchy.”
Avery returned the orchids.
Kept Brooke’s text.
Spencer sent no flowers.
He wrote:
I’M NOT GOING TO ASK YOU TO FORGIVE ME.
I’M SORRY.
I’LL KEEP DOING THE WORK WHETHER YOU EVER SPEAK TO ME AGAIN OR NOT.
Avery stared for a long time.
Then saved the message.
No reply.

Some apologies deserved acknowledgment.
Not necessarily access.
