Chapter 11 - THE CHAMPAGNE GLASSGraham hated sweet champagne.

Everyone close to him knew.
At birthdays he drank brut.
The glass tested for sedative came from a flute recovered in his office cabin.
Fingerprints consistent with Graham.
Trace lipstick? No. Let's avoid.
A steward named Lena Park remembered serving him earlier.
“He took brut.”
“Who brought another glass later?”
“I don’t know.”
She remembered Robert carrying two flutes at approximately 9:05.
Camera confirmed.
Robert initially denied giving Graham drink.
Then said he might have.
Why change?
“I remembered.”
His lawyer added stress affects recall.
Fair.
Robert denied adding medication.
Marcus had prescription sedative.
Could Marcus have slipped it?
Possibly.
Camera near bar showed Marcus entering service area around 9:03.
No direct footage of drink.
Then Sarah asked Graham:
“Do you remember Robert giving you champagne?”
“Maybe.”
“Did it taste strange?”
“No.”
“Did Marcus come near?”
“Yes, I think.”
Memory unreliable.
Prosecutors needed more.
They searched Marcus’s hotel room after warrant.
Prescription bottle found.
Four tablets unaccounted from expected count based dosing schedule.
Defense responded Marcus sometimes took two.
No proof.
One tablet could cause impairment.
Again suggestive.
Then lab found partial residue on napkin in waste bin near private office.
Same medication.
Could have been crushed.
DNA? too specific. Not necessary.
Security camera showed Marcus carrying napkin into office area earlier.
Still not direct.
Robert’s role remained harder.
Evan became increasingly convinced uncle ordered everything.
Naomi warned him:
“You are not investigator.”
“I know him.”
“That can make you worse.”
“He wanted interim control.”
“True.”
“He texted Marcus.”
“True.”
“He carried champagne.”
“True.”
“Then?”
“Then wait for evidence connecting.”
Evan hated waiting.
Control disease again.
Naomi said:
“Your father did this to you.”
“What?”
“Decided what facts meant before you finished speaking.”
Evan went quiet.
She continued:
“Don’t become him while trying to save him.”
That landed.
At hospital Graham asked to see Robert.
Law enforcement allowed monitored in presence counsel? Maybe not monitored without legal basis. They could speak but advised. Better Graham chooses not during active investigation.
Robert sent message:
I love you. I had nothing to do with what happened.
Graham did not answer.
Evan asked:
“Do you believe him?”
“I don’t know.”
First time Evan heard father say those words without forcing conclusion.
Graham looked toward window.
“I spent my life rewarding certainty.”
“And?”
“Sometimes certainty is just fear wearing a suit.”
Evan almost smiled.
Then Graham looked at him.
“What’s wrong with you?”
Evan’s chest tightened.
He still had not told him about bow.
Investigators knew partial? At this point Evan still hasn't confessed. Need do in chapter 14 per outline. He lies.
“Nothing.”
Graham watched.
“You haven’t looked me in the eye since you came.”
“I’m tired.”
“Evan.”
“I said nothing.”
Graham let it go.
That made guilt worse.
Meanwhile board retained independent counsel and froze Robert’s authority over vendor payments.
Marcus suspended.
Peter Dole subpoenaed.
Dole claimed all payments legitimate.
His investment fund returns to Robert based on prior capital.
Could be.
Forensic accountants found one unusually timed $600,000 preferred distribution to Robert-controlled trust within week of large Whitmore payment to Blue Crest.
Not impossible.
Need intent.
Then Marcus’s assistant, Jenna Price, came forward.
She had been asked to prepare $250,000 “emergency consulting” payment to a Dole entity the afternoon before birthday.
She questioned.
Marcus said:
“Robert approved.”
No written approval.
She refused without email.
Payment never sent.
That was big.
Robert denied.
His attorney called it hearsay from Marcus through assistant.
Correct.
Still lead.
Jenna also remembered Marcus saying:
“By tomorrow morning Graham won’t be our problem.”
“What did you think?”
“That he meant board.”
“Did he say dead?”
“No.”
“Gone?”
“No.”
Again no embellishment.
Investigators kept building.
And then Oxnard SUV driver was identified.
His name was Adrian Lowe.
He had been paid through a private security company.
The contracting email came not from Marcus.
May you like
It came from an assistant in Robert Whitmore’s personal office.
Now the bridge was forming.
