Chapter 15 - THE CALL FROM SANTA BARBARAGraham left hospital three days later.

He did not return to yacht.

He did not return to main Greenwich? Actually California home? Family probably coastal. Let's say Newport Beach residence while recovery.

He stayed at a rented private residence near Santa Barbara under security while investigation continued.

His memory recovered in fragments.

Champagne.

Robert.

Marcus.

A corridor.

Someone holding his arm.

A cold rush of night air.

Engine noise.

Then:

“You should have left audit alone.”

He could not attach voice confidently.

That was frustrating.

Investigators refused to let him guess.

Meanwhile Robert was arrested on federal/state coordinated charges? Since kidnapping across? Transport in California but maritime/federal jurisdiction maybe FBI due unlawful confinement? We can keep broad: charged with conspiracy, unlawful restraint/kidnapping-related federal offenses, obstruction, wire fraud in business scheme after indictment. Better realistic enough.

Marcus entered cooperation agreement pending plea.

Robert pleaded not guilty.

His lawyer, David Shaw, attacked Marcus.

“A confessed liar facing prison has every incentive to blame a wealthy executive.”

True concern.

Prosecutors needed corroboration.

Voicemail.

Texts.

SUV email.

Assistant testimony.

Financial motive.

Digital deletion.

All helped.

Robert’s defense:

He believed Graham voluntarily agreed to shore transfer after becoming impaired.

Voicemail “get him ashore” consistent.

Why “keep him quiet”?

Avoid scandal.

Why “need morning”?

Audit board discussion.

He claimed intent was to postpone meeting because Graham impaired.

But why camera blackout?

Marcus acting independently.

Why phone/wallet left?

Marcus.

Why false statements about champagne?

Memory.

Defense had explanations.

Some weak.

Enough to require case.

Graham wanted immediate public statement condemning Robert.

His lawyers advised no.

“Why should I protect him?”

“You are not protecting. You are preserving fair process.”

Graham hated.

Evan saw irony.

All his life Graham expected immediate obedience because he trusted his interpretation.

Now system told him wait.

One evening Graham called Evan.

First call since confession.

Evan stared before answering.

“Hi.”

“Come tomorrow.”

“For what?”

“Conversation.”

Evan arrived next morning.

Graham stood on terrace overlooking ocean.

No blindfold.

No railing nearby.

Neither missed symbolism.

Graham said:

“I keep trying to decide which part angers me more.”

Evan stayed silent.

“That you thought it.”

Pause.

“Or that I made relationship where you could think it.”

Evan shook head.

“Don’t do that.”

“What?”

“Take responsibility for my thought.”

Graham looked at him.

“That’s not what I’m doing.”

“It sounds like it.”

“I’m responsible for how I treated you.”

“I’m responsible for what I almost did.”

Both stood.

That was new.

No one stealing other’s responsibility.

Graham asked:

“Why did you stop?”

“I told you.”

“Say again.”

“You said you were proud of me.”

Graham looked toward ocean.

“I was.”

“Were?”

Graham did not answer.

That hurt.

Then:

“I don’t know how to trust you right now.”

Evan nodded.

“I understand.”

“I also know you didn’t abduct me.”

“Low bar.”

“Yes.”

They almost smiled.

Almost.

Graham continued:

“Your uncle may have committed crimes against me. That does not repair us.”

“I know.”

“Your debt is still yours.”

“Yes.”

“I planned to forgive Merrick note.”

“I know.”

“Do you still want me to?”

Evan looked at him.

Then said:

“No.”

Graham seemed surprised.

“I’m not taking it.”

“Why?”

“Because right now I need something in my life that isn’t determined by what you give or take.”

“You could bankrupt yourself proving a point.”

“Maybe.”

Graham’s old instinct rose.

Evan saw.

“Don’t.”

Graham stopped.

For once.

Evan continued:

“I’ll restructure. Sell assets. Negotiate.”

“You need professional advice.”

“I’ll get it.”

“From someone not me.”

“Yes.”

Graham nodded.

That was the first small brick.

Not forgiveness.

A boundary.

Later that day Graham’s memory gave one more fragment.

Inside tender, before consciousness faded, he remembered Marcus arguing with someone by phone.

Words:

“Robert, this wasn’t the deal.”

He told investigators.

Memory alone weak.

But if corroborated—

it placed Robert beyond general knowledge.

Phone records showed Marcus called Robert at 10:29.

During tender transit.

Duration: 1 minute 17 seconds.

Robert had claimed no contact after 10:02.

Another lie.

The case tightened.
