Chapter 12 - THE CAMERA THAT WENT DARKThe missing seven minutes of camera footage were not missing because someone expertly hacked the yacht.

That would have been easier to dramatize.

Reality was mundane.

Someone rebooted the aft-deck camera controller using chief engineer credentials.

System went offline from 10:11 to 10:18.

Tender launch occurred at 10:14.

Perfect overlap.

Chief engineer Raymond Cole had given temporary credentials to Marcus three weeks earlier.

Marcus denied remembering password.

Digital logs showed his laptop accessed yacht maintenance portal two days before birthday.

His attorney argued system auto-login.

Possible.

Then investigators found a saved credential file.

Harder.

Marcus requested negotiation.

Not full cooperation yet.

His lawyer wanted to know exposure.

Unlawful confinement.

Tampering.

Financial fraud.

Potential drugging.

Serious.

Marcus began blaming Robert.

Exactly as expected.

Prosecutors did not automatically believe.

Marcus said Robert devised plan.

Not to kill Graham.

To delay him.

“What was objective?” Sarah asked.

“Keep him away until after emergency board meeting.”

“How long?”

“Until late morning.”

“Why?”

“Robert wanted audit files deleted and authority shifted.”

“Did Robert instruct drugging?”

“He said Graham needed to be ‘manageable.’”

“Exact word?”

“Yes.”

“Written?”

“No.”

“Who supplied pills?”

“I did.”

“Why?”

“I had prescription.”

“How did it enter drink?”

Marcus looked down.

“I crushed one.”

“Who gave glass?”

“Robert.”

There.

Direct accusation.

“Did Robert know?”

“Yes.”

“Proof?”

“No.”

“Anyone hear?”

“No.”

“Why should we believe you?”

Marcus swallowed.

“Because I’m the idiot who did most of it.”

Good answer.

He admitted using credentials.

Arranging Caleb.

Deleting files.

Calling SUV.

But email for SUV came from Robert’s office assistant.

Why?

“Robert told her it was for a guest transfer.”

Did assistant know?

No.

Marcus claimed Graham was never supposed to be injured.

After sedative took effect, Robert and Marcus guided him toward aft service corridor.

Graham became confused.

Asked what was happening.

Marcus told him doctor awaited ashore.

They moved him into tender during camera blackout.

“Was Graham conscious?”

“Yes, barely.”

“Did he consent?”

“No.”

“Who accompanied to shore?”

Marcus.

“Robert?”

“No.”

That surprised investigators.

“Where was Robert?”

“Back on yacht.”

Why?

“He needed alibi and board presence.”

At Oxnard, Adrian drove Graham north.

“Where?”

A rented house near Ventura initially.

“Why Graham found Santa Barbara?”

Marcus claimed plan changed.

Adrian panicked.

Instead of holding Graham, drove farther, left him near marina road before dawn once Graham began waking.

Adrian later confirmed partly.

He thought it was private family intervention.

Was paid $40,000.

When Graham became lucid enough to demand police, Adrian panicked, left him near place where he could be found.

Still criminal.

But less than murder.

Why remove phone/wallet?

Marcus took them on yacht so tracking impossible and disappearance looked like overboard fall.

Blazer placed aft as misdirection.

That detail chilled Evan.

They wanted everyone searching ocean.

Hours mattered.

Robert could push emergency governance.

Delete audit.

Maybe authorize financial transfers.

Marcus said:

“Robert never said kill him.”

Prosecutors asked:

“Did you believe Graham could be harmed?”

“Yes.”

“And proceeded?”

“Yes.”

Marcus’s cooperation required corroboration.

They got it.

Phone location.

Tender logs.

Payment.

Assistant email.

Deleted files.

Sedative.

Robert’s texts.

Still direct instruction mostly from Marcus testimony.

Prosecutors wanted independent proof Robert knew drugging/abduction.

Then they recovered a deleted voice memo from Marcus’s phone cloud backup.

Not secret recording of Robert conversation? Could be legally obtained. Maybe Marcus accidentally activated voice memo? Too convenient. Better a voicemail from Robert to Marcus. Voicemail exists.

Stop improvising. Get him ashore, keep him quiet, and call me when it’s done. We need morning. Nothing more.

Timestamp 9:52 p.m.

“Keep him quiet” ambiguous.

“Get him ashore” clear.

Robert could argue Graham had agreed?

But evidence no.

At minimum Robert knew removal.

And phrase:

We need morning.

Exactly motive.

Sarah played voicemail for Robert’s lawyers.

Robert did not confess.

He said nothing.

But his face changed.

The same way Evan’s had when bow video appeared.

Not proof.

Yet some moments reveal when a person understands story protecting them has just become harder to maintain.
