Chapter 20 - DIVORCE PAPERSConrad placed divorce papers on kitchen table.

Clara stared.

“What?”

“You said we need choose.”

Her heart dropped despite herself.

He continued:

“I asked counsel draft uncontested dissolution so you know option real.”

“No leverage.”

“No asset fight.”

“Rose plan separate.”

“If you want divorce, sign when ready.”

Clara looked at him.

“You want?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because staying married should become choice, not accident because you disappeared.”

That hit deeply.

For six years legal marriage existed without consent.

Now he returned consent.

Clara touched papers.

“What if I don’t sign?”

“Then we decide what marriage means.”

She cried.

Conrad sat opposite.

“I’m not asking you to choose tonight.”

Clara laughed.

“Why are you suddenly good at this?”

“Fear and expensive therapy.”

She smiled.

They left papers.

Weeks passed.

They continued dating, strangely.

Dinner.

Rose activities.

Separate homes.

Sex sometimes.

Arguments.

Vivienne moved fully on with her documentary producer, Daniel Huxley maybe unique. Let's choose Nolan? used. Peter Winslow maybe. Not important.

Conrad met him once at gala.

Vivienne introduced.

No drama.

Clara watched from across.

Later:

“Jealous?”

Conrad:

“A little.”

She laughed.

Good.

Then Clara's hotel career.

Management offered promotion to housekeeping supervisor after media, but she declined because feared token.

Instead enrolled in hotel operations certificate at Boston University continuing education? Could be.

She had discovered she liked hospitality but not cleaning permanently.

Conrad offered job at Bellamy hotel.

She almost threw napkin.

“Absolutely not.”

He laughed.

“Fair.”

Halcyon Grand promoted her based on performance to guest-services training coordinator months later after application.

She earned.

Conrad stayed out.

That mattered.

One night Clara found divorce papers again.

Rose asleep.

Conrad in kitchen.

She tore them.

Not dramatically? She could just say no. Tearing is cinematic.

Conrad froze.

“That is not legally meaningful.”

“I know.”

“Then?”

“I don’t want divorce.”

His eyes filled.

Clara continued:

“I also don’t want old marriage.”

“Neither.”

“So if we stay…”

“We build new.”

“Yes.”

He walked closer.

“Can I kiss my wife?”

She smiled.

“That line would have annoyed me six months ago.”

“And now?”

May you like

“Still does.”

She kissed him first.
