Chapter 24 - THE VACUUM CORDHalcyon Grand invited Clara to speak at employee development program after promotion to training manager.

She almost declined because full circle felt cheesy.
Then accepted.
Conrad attended quietly in back.
Topic:
career mobility in hospitality.
Clara did not mention missing-wife story.
She talked about housekeeping as skilled labor:
time management,
guest privacy,
safety,
physical work,
detail.
She hated media narrative that treated maid uniform as symbol of humiliation.
“There was nothing shameful about cleaning rooms,” she said.
“The shame belonged to people who assumed uniform told them everything about person wearing it.”
Conrad smiled.
After event they walked twelfth-floor corridor.
Same.
Polished stone.
Cream walls.
Bright lighting.
A housekeeper vacuumed near rooms.
Power cord across edge.
Conrad stopped.
Clara smiled.
“Careful.”
He stepped over dramatically.
“I learn.”
“You almost fell once.”
“I did not fall.”
“You made face.”
“I tripped.”
“You glared at me.”
“For half second.”
“Then cried.”
He laughed.
Rose, now seven, walked between them.
“Is this where Dad found you?”
“Yes.”
“Because vacuum?”
“Yes.”
Rose looked at machine.
“So vacuum saved family.”
Clara groaned.
“No.”
Conrad:
“Maybe ten percent.”
Rose laughed.
Call back to another trope, but fine.
Clara touched his arm.
The corridor no longer frightening.
Housekeeper passed.
Conrad said:
“Thank you.”
Woman smiled, confused.
Clara raised eyebrow.
May you like
“Don’t become weird.”
He laughed.
