Chapter 1 - THE LOCKED BEDROOM DOORI came home early because my wife was eight months pregnant.

That was the only reason.

The meeting in San Francisco had ended before noon, and I ignored my assistant’s offer to book a hotel for another night.

I wanted to surprise Claire.

I stopped at the florist on Rodeo Drive and bought twenty-four white roses—the same flowers I had given her on our first anniversary.

Then I drove home without calling.

The mansion was unusually quiet.

No music.

No staff moving through the halls.

Even the lights downstairs had been dimmed.

“Claire?”

No answer.

I placed the roses on the marble table and climbed the curved staircase.

Halfway up, I heard a man’s voice.

Soft.

Intimate.

Coming from our bedroom.

I stopped.

For several seconds, I told myself it had to be the television.

Then the man laughed.

It was not a voice I recognized immediately, but it was close enough to make the skin along my arms tighten.

I walked down the hallway.

The bedroom door was closed.

When I touched the handle, it would not turn.

Locked.

Claire had never locked that door during our marriage.

Not once.

I stood there with my hand wrapped around the cold brass handle.

Inside, footsteps moved across the marble floor.

Then Claire spoke.

Her voice was warm.

Playful.

Nothing like the exhausted voice she used with me lately.

“You worry too much.”

The man replied, but his words were too quiet to understand.

I leaned closer.

A shadow passed beneath the door.

Then came a sound I would never forget.

A kiss.

Followed by Claire’s soft laughter.

The roses slipped from my hand.

Several petals scattered across the hallway floor.

I should have knocked.

I should have called her name.

Instead, I remained completely silent.

Because the man inside my bedroom had started speaking again.

And this time, I heard every word.

“Does he know?”

Claire did not answer immediately.

The man lowered his voice.

“Does Daniel know the baby isn’t his?”

My fingers tightened around the door handle.

Inside the room, my wife laughed again.

“No,” she said calmly. “I hid it very carefully.”

That was when the handle moved beneath my hand.

Someone inside had just tried to open the door.

And I was standing directly outside.
