Chapter 9 - WHAT DANIEL DIDN’T DOFour transfers.

Each just below the level that required direct confirmation from me.
Together, they totaled $1.8 million.
The money had moved through a consulting company registered in Nevada.
The company’s director was listed as a woman named Olivia Grant.
I had never heard that name.
Neither had my attorney.
“Freeze every account connected to the family trust,” I said.
Claire’s head snapped toward me.
“You can’t freeze my money.”
“Our joint operating accounts will remain available for ordinary expenses and medical care. Everything else is being protected.”
“You’re punishing me.”
“No. I’m preserving evidence.”
Ryan moved toward the door again.
This time, I let him reach it.
Then I said, “If you leave before giving a statement, I’ll assume the shell company belongs to you.”
He stopped.
“It doesn’t.”
“Then prove it.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You think he’ll help you?”
Ryan turned.
“I think I finally understand what you were doing.”
“You understood when you climbed into my bed.”
His jaw tightened.
I stepped between them.
Not to protect their feelings.
To prevent the situation from becoming physical.
There was already enough betrayal in that room.
There would not be violence too.
Part of me wanted to hit Ryan.
That truth shamed me.
I imagined my fist meeting his face.
I imagined the brief relief.
Then I imagined explaining that action to a judge.
To my child.
To myself.
So I did not touch him.
That decision became important later.
At the time, it felt like the hardest thing I had ever done.
Claire began breathing rapidly.
She pressed one hand against her belly.
“My chest hurts.”
Every other argument stopped.
I called the private obstetric emergency line.
Within minutes, a nurse instructed Claire to sit on the bed and monitor the baby’s movement.
I brought her water.
Ryan watched in disbelief.
“After everything, you’re helping her?”
“I’m helping the child.”
Claire looked at me over the rim of the glass.
Her eyes were unreadable.
The nurse determined that Claire was likely experiencing a panic response, but recommended an examination because of the pregnancy.
I arranged a car and medical escort.
“I’m not going anywhere with you,” Claire said.
“I won’t accompany you. A nurse will.”
She looked surprised.
I had never drawn a boundary with her before.
Not one she could not move through tears or anger.
The police arrived as Claire’s medical car pulled away.
Ryan remained in the bedroom.
I gave the officers the forged authorization, the recording, and access to the mirror’s files.
One officer examined the document.
“Who benefits from this transfer?”
Before I could answer, Ryan spoke.
“Olivia Grant.”
The officer looked at him.
“Who is she?”
May you like
Ryan swallowed.
“Claire’s mother.”
