record

Chapter 8 - CLAIRE’S FIRST LIEThe recording was six months old.

Claire was barely showing then.

She stood beside the bed with a laboratory envelope in her hands.

Her face was tense.

Not frightened.

Angry.

The person on the phone asked something.

Claire answered, “No, Ryan can’t know.”

The audio from the other side was too faint.

She paced toward the mirror.

“If he learns the result, he’ll leave. I need him committed until the transfers are complete.”

My eyes moved to Ryan.

He looked physically ill.

Claire rushed to the control panel.

I caught her wrist before she could touch it.

“Let go of me.”

I released her immediately.

She held her wrist against her chest as though I had hurt her.

The performance might have worked if the mirror had not captured everything.

“You said the report named me,” Ryan whispered.

Claire’s eyes remained on me.

“It did.”

“We just heard you say the result wasn’t what you expected.”

“That could mean anything.”

“Then show us the original,” I said.

“I destroyed it.”

“Why?”

“Because I panicked.”

Ryan stood.

“No. You made me take a paternity test. You arranged the clinic. You brought me the report.”

“And you believed exactly what you wanted to believe.”

“You told me I was the father.”

“You wanted to be important.”

The cruelty in her voice silenced him.

For a moment, I saw the entire relationship differently.

Ryan had betrayed me.

He had slept with my wife.

He had helped prepare fraudulent transfers.

But Claire had also manipulated him.

She had used the promise of a child to hold him inside her plan.

Victim and offender were not always separate people.

Sometimes they occupied the same body.

“What did the original result say?” I asked.

Claire turned away.

I stepped closer to the mirror and resumed the recording.

Claire was still speaking on the phone.

“I can switch the pages,” she said. “Ryan has never seen Daniel’s medical records.”

A pause.

“No, the baby doesn’t change anything.”

Another pause.

“The child is leverage either way.”

My heart stopped.

Not daughter.

Not baby.

Leverage.

Ryan covered his face.

I stared at Claire’s reflection.

She had once spent an entire night crying because she feared she would never become a mother.

Now she had reduced the unborn child to a strategy.

I stopped the recording.

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Claire finally spoke.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

She looked at me.

For the first time that evening, her confidence cracked.

“My life was disappearing.”

I said nothing.

“I was becoming your wife. The woman who smiled beside Daniel Morgan. The woman who waited at home while you built everything.”

“You controlled your own foundation.”

“With your name attached.”

“You had access to every account we created together.”

“Access isn’t ownership.”

There it was.

Not love.

Not loneliness.

Ownership.

Then my phone rang.

My attorney’s name appeared on the screen.

May you like

When I answered, he did not greet me.

“Daniel,” he said, “do not sign anything. We found four earlier transfers.”
