Chapter 18 - LILY ASKS THE QUESTION RYAN CAN’T ESCAPE

Lily refused to see Judith.

Natalie had not suggested it.

Ryan had not either.

When Judith sent a birthday card, Lily placed it unopened on the kitchen counter.

“Do I have to?”

“No,” Natalie said.

“Will Grandma be sad?”

“Probably.”

“Is that my fault?”

“No.”

Ryan sat nearby.

Lily looked at him.

“Did Grandma say sorry to you?”

“Yes.”

“To Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Then why can’t everything be normal?”

Neither parent answered immediately.

Ryan said:

“Because sorry is the beginning.”

Lily frowned.

“What comes after?”

“Doing differently.”

That made sense to her.

Then she asked the harder question.

“Why didn’t you stop her?”

Ryan froze.

Natalie remained silent.

This belonged to him.

He crouched beside Lily.

“I was scared.”

“Of Grandma?”

“Yes.”

Lily looked confused.

“You’re bigger.”

Ryan almost laughed.

“People can be scared of things besides getting hurt.”

“What?”

“Losing people. Being embarrassed. Getting in trouble.”

Lily considered.

“Were you scared Grandma would tell Mom something?”

Ryan looked at Natalie.

Then back.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“That’s adult information.”

Lily accepted that.

Children often accept boundaries better when adults do not pretend boundaries are lies.

She asked:

“Was it bad?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t want Mom to know?”

“Yes.”

Lily thought.

“So you let Grandma hit Mom because you didn’t want to get in trouble.”

Ryan closed his eyes briefly.

Children had a brutal gift for compression.

“Yes.”

Lily stared.

“That was mean.”

Ryan nodded.

“It was.”

No:

I didn’t mean to.

No:

It was complicated.

Just yes.

Lily leaned against Natalie.

Then said:

“Don’t do it again.”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“I won’t.”

Natalie watched.

Promises alone were cheap.

May you like

But this one came after admission.

Maybe that mattered.
