Chapter 4 - “IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK”

Ryan arrived at the hotel at eleven.
Natalie did not invite him upstairs.
They met in the lobby.
He looked terrible.
Same pale-blue shirt from dinner, wrinkled now.
No jacket.
Dark circles beneath his eyes.
“You didn’t sleep,” she said.
“Neither did you.”
“Don’t make us tender.”
He nodded.
Fair.
They sat in a corner near the fireplace.
“Tell me about the money.”
Ryan looked down.
“I borrowed twenty-five thousand from Mom.”
“For Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I said she gets until tonight.”
Natalie’s jaw tightened.
“You do not get to keep using her privacy as a shield.”
“I know.”
“Then stop.”
Ryan looked at her.
“I made her promise she would tell you today.”
“She had six months.”
“Yes.”
“So did you.”
“Yes.”
The fact he was no longer defending himself made anger harder to aim.
Not smaller.
Harder.
Natalie leaned forward.
“Did you borrow money before or after the Thursday meetings started?”
“After.”
“How long after?”
“About three weeks.”
“Do I know about this debt?”
“No.”
“Where did you tell me the money came from?”
“I didn’t.”
“How were you repaying Judith?”
“Monthly transfers.”
“From where?”
“My bonus account.”
Natalie stared.
They kept some finances separate for convenience.
But major debts were supposed to be disclosed.
“How much is left?”
“Seventeen thousand five hundred.”
“Does Judith charge interest?”
“No.”
“Of course not.”
That was worse.
Interest would have made it a loan.
No interest made it leverage.
“Did she ever mention the secret when you disagreed with her?”
Ryan’s face changed.
Natalie saw the answer.
“How many times?”
“I don’t know.”
“More than once?”
“Yes.”
“And yesterday?”
Ryan looked away.
“She had been angry with me all week.”
“About?”
“I told her she couldn’t keep coming over unannounced.”
Natalie almost laughed.
“You finally set a boundary.”
“Yes.”
“And she threatened the secret?”
“She said I should be careful acting self-righteous when I was lying to my own wife.”
Natalie stared.
“Was she wrong?”
“No.”
That answer mattered.
Again.
Ryan continued.
“But she used it to keep me from challenging her.”
“You let her.”
“Yes.”
They sat in silence.
Natalie asked:
“Why didn’t you stand when she slapped me?”
Ryan closed his eyes.
That was the question.
The real one.
He had answers.
None good.
“I froze.”
“Why?”
“Because I was shocked.”
“Then why did you stay seated?”
He swallowed.
“Because she looked at me.”
Natalie frowned.
“What?”
“After she hit you.”
He looked sick.
“She looked at me like she was daring me.”
“And?”
“I knew if I went after her hard enough, she might tell you everything.”
Natalie leaned back.
The betrayal rearranged itself.
He had not remained seated because he thought Judith was right.
He had remained seated because he was calculating.
Protecting a secret.
While his wife stood with a burning cheek.
“You let me take that slap because you were afraid she’d expose you.”
Ryan’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
There was no useful apology after that.
Natalie stood.
“I need you to leave.”
“Natalie.”
“No.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
She looked down at him.
“That’s not the same as me being ready to hear it.”
Ryan nodded slowly.
“What about Lily?”
“You can see her tonight if she wants.”
“Okay.”
“And Ryan?”
He looked up.
“If Vanessa doesn’t tell me by six, you do.”
“I will.”
“No extensions.”
“No.”
“No protecting her.”
“No.”
“No deciding what I can handle.”
His face broke slightly.
“I understand.”
Natalie shook her head.
“No. You’re starting to.”
Then she left.
At 11:47, Vanessa finally texted.
Can we meet?
Natalie answered:
2 PM. Oak Brook Library parking lot.
Vanessa replied:
Please somewhere private.
Natalie stared.
May you like
Then typed:
You lost the right to choose comfortable conditions.
