Chapter 22 - NATALIE MOVES OUT WITHOUT FILING FOR DIVORCE

Natalie rented a townhouse in Elmhurst.
Three bedrooms.
Smaller yard.
Closer to Lily’s school.
Ryan helped carry boxes only after asking.
Judith did not know the address for several months.
That was deliberate.
On moving day, Ryan stood in the kitchen holding a box marked GLASSES.
“Where?”
“Upper cabinet.”
He put it away.
Then:
“Are you leaving me?”
Natalie had expected the question.
She answered carefully.
“I’m leaving the version of our marriage where everyone knows things about my life except me.”
Ryan looked down.
“That sounds like yes.”
“It isn’t.”
“Then what is it?”
“I don’t know.”
He hated uncertainty.
She saw him resist the instinct to force clarity.
Good.
Natalie continued.
“I need to know whether I miss you or just miss being married.”
Ryan absorbed it.
“That hurts.”
“I know.”
“I’m not saying that to stop you.”
“I know.”
He set the empty box down.
“What do you need from me?”
“Consistency.”
“What does that mean?”
“Don’t perform change for me.”
He frowned.
“Then how will you know?”
“I’ll know eventually.”
Another uncertainty.
He nodded.
Ryan moved into a small apartment near the family home temporarily while they decided what to do with the Oak Brook house.
Lily moved between parents.
They told her:
“We are not deciding forever right now.”
She cried.
Got angry.
Asked whether Grandma caused it.
Natalie said:
“No single person caused this.”
Ryan added:
“I made choices that hurt Mom.”
Lily asked:
“Are you getting divorced?”
“We don’t know.”
She hated that.
So did they.
May you like
But they refused to lie for comfort.
That itself was change.
