Chapter 1 - The Surprise She Had Waited Years ForClaire Bennett had imagined the moment so many times that when it finally seemed to arrive, she almost laughed at how perfectly Ethan had planned it.

The waterfall thundered behind them, sending silver mist into the bright Colorado afternoon. After nearly four hours of climbing narrow trails and scrambling over wet stone, they had reached the highest overlook at Raven Falls, a place Ethan had insisted she needed to see at least once in her life.

Claire was forty-five, old enough to know that perfect moments usually existed only in movies.

Yet this one felt real.

Ethan stood in front of her in his dark hiking jacket, his small backpack resting near a flat rock several yards away. At thirty, he was fifteen years younger than she was, a difference Claire had spent the first six months of their relationship trying not to think about.

Then she had stopped apologizing for being happy.

Ethan reached for both of her hands.

His sports watch caught the sunlight.

“Close your eyes,” he said softly. “I have a surprise.”

Claire stared at him.

“Really?”

The smile he gave her was the same smile that had disarmed her the first night they met at a charity fundraiser in Denver.

Warm.

Boyish.

Almost shy.

Her heart started pounding.

For the past month, Ethan had been acting secretive. He had taken calls outside. Closed his laptop when she entered rooms. Once, Claire had found him scrolling through photographs of diamond rings.

She had told herself not to assume anything.

Now she glanced down at his hands.

Nothing.

Maybe the ring was in his pocket.

Her throat tightened.

“I’ve waited so long for this…” she whispered.

Not simply for a proposal.

For someone to choose her.

Her divorce nine years earlier had left scars Claire rarely discussed. Her ex-husband had traded twenty-two years of history for a woman from his office who was barely older than their daughter. Afterward, Claire had built walls around herself so high that even her closest friends had stopped expecting her to date seriously.

Then Ethan arrived.

Patient.

Funny.

Attentive.

He remembered her coffee order. He brought soup when she was sick. He listened when she talked about Ava, even when Claire repeated the same stories.

Most importantly, he had never made Claire feel old.

Standing beside Raven Falls, Claire allowed herself to believe she might finally get the ending she thought life had taken away from her.

She closed her eyes.

Her hands remained slightly extended.

Behind her, thousands of gallons of mountain water rushed across black stone before disappearing over the edge.

Claire smiled.

“Can I look now?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

She laughed nervously.

“Ethan?”

Still nothing.

She heard his boots scrape against the wet rock.

He was moving closer.

Claire’s smile widened.

She expected arms around her waist.

Maybe a whispered speech.

Instead, both of Ethan’s hands settled firmly on her shoulders.

Something about the pressure felt wrong.

Claire opened her eyes.

Ethan’s face had changed.

There was no love in it.

No nervous excitement.

No smile.

His eyes were so empty that for one impossible second Claire didn’t recognize the man standing in front of her.

“Ethan?”

He shoved her.

Hard.

Claire’s hiking shoe slipped on wet stone.

Her body twisted backward.

Her hands shot out instinctively.

“ETHAN?!”

She saw him above her.

Not reaching.

Not panicking.

Watching.

Then the current seized her.

Claire struck the rushing water and was swept toward the edge before she could scream again.

The world disappeared.

For a fraction of a second, she was weightless.

Then she fell.

The impact with the pool below felt like being hit by concrete.

Water swallowed her.

Cold punched the air from her lungs.

Claire sank into darkness while bubbles exploded around her.

Above, Ethan remained at the summit.

He stared down at the boiling pool.

Thirty seconds passed.

Then forty.

Nothing surfaced.

Ethan finally moved.

He looked over his shoulder.

Empty trail.

Empty rocks.

No hikers.

He walked toward Claire’s backpack and picked it up.

Then he removed his phone.

His thumb had barely touched the screen when a sound came from somewhere behind him.

Click.

Ethan froze.

It was unmistakable.

A camera shutter.

Slowly, he turned.

Far across the rocks, partly hidden behind a formation of dark granite, stood a person holding a camera.

Too far away to recognize.

Close enough to have seen everything.

For the first time since Claire went over the edge, genuine fear appeared on Ethan’s face.

The mysterious figure lowered the camera.

Then disappeared behind the rocks.

Ethan stared after them.

Below him, Raven Falls continued roaring.

He had no idea that beneath the white water, Claire’s eyes had opened.

And she had heard something through the chaos that terrified her more than the fall.

Ethan’s voice.

Faint.

Distant.

But unmistakable.

He was speaking to someone on the phone.

May you like

And the words Claire heard were:

“It’s done.”
