Chapter 18 - Michael Chose Her FirstMichael finally stopped lying.

Not because he wanted to.

Because the video left him nowhere to hide.

Claire watched it twice.

Michael sat inside her old vacation home in Vail.

Thomas Coleman sat opposite him.

A photograph of Claire rested between them.

Michael slid a folder across the table.

Thomas opened it.

Financial statements.

Schedule.

Insurance.

Everything Ethan later used.

Then Michael spoke.

“She’ll trust someone younger.”

Claire shut her eyes.

Thomas laughed.

“How much younger?”

“Enough to make her feel wanted.”

Ava left the room.

She couldn’t listen.

Claire forced herself to continue.

Thomas asked, “And when she’s gone?”

Michael answered:

“My debt disappears.”

There it was.

No threat.

No coercion.

No Ava.

Not at the beginning.

Michael had selected Claire.

Her own ex-husband had offered her as payment.

Mercer confronted him.

Michael broke within minutes.

“I didn’t think Thomas would kill her.”

Claire stared through the glass.

Again.

That sentence.

Again.

“I thought Ethan would marry her. Get access to the money. Maybe manipulate her into transferring assets.”

Mercer’s expression hardened.

“You conspired to financially exploit your ex-wife.”

“Yes.”

“And when Rebecca discovered the operation?”

“I panicked.”

“You went to the lake.”

“Yes.”

“Did you kill her?”

“No.”

“Did you watch Ethan kill her?”

Michael started crying.

Claire knew the answer before he spoke.

“Yes.”

Rebecca’s death finally became clear.

She confronted Ethan.

Michael agreed to help her expose him.

Then Thomas reminded Michael about his debt and involvement.

Michael withdrew.

Rebecca threatened police.

At the lake, Ethan overturned her kayak.

Rebecca survived.

She reached shore.

Michael stood there.

She begged him to help.

He didn’t.

Ethan pushed Rebecca back into the water.

Held her under.

Michael watched.

Claire left before hearing more.

Outside, Ava sat on a bench.

Claire joined her.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally Ava asked, “How do I live with knowing who my father is?”

Claire looked at her daughter.

“You don’t have to carry what he did.”

“But he’s part of me.”

“Biology is not destiny.”

Ava’s eyes filled.

“Ethan is part of him too.”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan became a monster.”

Claire understood the fear beneath the words.

She took Ava’s face between her hands.

“You choose who you become every day.”

Ava started crying.

Claire held her.

The federal investigation exploded nationally over the next several weeks.

Thomas Coleman became linked to eleven suspicious deaths spanning twenty-three years.

Ethan directly participated in at least four.

Mara facilitated financial transactions in six.

Michael became a cooperating witness after accepting a plea agreement.

Claire didn’t forgive him.

Ava stopped visiting.

Maya finally received something close to justice for Rebecca.

One afternoon, she visited Claire.

They sat on Claire’s porch.

“You know what’s weird?” Maya said.

“What?”

“I followed Ethan for five months.”

Claire looked at her.

“Five?”

“I knew he was dating you.”

“Why didn’t you warn me?”

Maya looked ashamed.

“I tried.”

Claire frowned.

“When?”

“Three months ago. I sent you an email.”

Claire remembered hundreds of messages landing in junk folders.

“I never saw it.”

“I figured.”

Maya looked toward the mountains.

“I thought if I followed him long enough, I’d get proof.”

“You did.”

“At your expense.”

Claire shook her head.

“No. Ethan did that.”

Maya smiled faintly.

Then she handed Claire an envelope.

“What’s this?”

“The photograph.”

Claire opened it.

Printed professionally.

The moment Ethan pushed her.

Claire stared at it.

“I don’t want this.”

“Turn it over.”

Claire did.

On the back, Maya had written:

THE MOMENT YOU SURVIVED.

Claire’s throat tightened.

“That isn’t how I saw it.”

“I know.”

Maya stood.

“Maybe someday you will.”

After she left, Claire placed the photograph in a drawer.

Not displayed.

Not destroyed.

That night Ava came over with pizza.

They watched a terrible comedy.

For three hours Claire felt almost normal.

Then the doorbell rang.

Ruiz stood outside.

She held a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was the ring.

Claire stared.

“We can return this now.”

“I don’t want it.”

“There’s something engraved inside.”

Claire hesitated.

“What?”

Ruiz handed her a magnifying glass.

Claire read the tiny inscription inside the band.

Not Claire’s name.

Not Ethan’s.

A date.

September 4.

Claire remembered that date.

The woman in Ethan’s storage unit.

His next target.

First contact scheduled September 4.

Claire looked at Ruiz.

“This ring wasn’t for me.”

Ruiz shook her head.

“No.”

Claire felt unexpected relief.

Then Ruiz gave her one final item.

A photograph of the next woman.

“We contacted her.”

“Is she okay?”

“Yes.”

“Does she know Ethan?”

The deputy’s expression changed.

“She says she’s never met him.”

“Good.”

“But she knew Thomas Coleman.”

Claire waited.

“How?”

May you like

Ruiz answered quietly.

“She was married to him.”
