Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Survived Before ClaireMonica Reed lived under another name.

Police found her outside Santa Fe.
Fifty-two.
Former real-estate developer.
Declared missing for fourteen months before suddenly contacting family and claiming she had left voluntarily.
Her relationship with Ethan had never been publicly documented.
But his storage unit contained an entire box dedicated to her.
Monica agreed to speak only after Claire called.
“You’re alive,” Monica said.
“So are you.”
A long silence.
“Not because Ethan wanted me to be.”
Claire gripped the phone.
“Then help me find my daughter.”
Monica arrived under federal escort six hours later.
Claire expected someone broken.
Instead Monica appeared composed.
Dark blazer.
Minimal makeup.
Cold eyes.
When she saw Claire’s injuries, something shifted.
“He used the waterfall.”
Claire stared.
“You knew?”
“He talked about it.”
“For me?”
“For whoever came next.”
Monica sat.
“Ethan likes places where nature can be blamed.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“Rebecca had water. Linda had a balcony. Paula had a road.”
“And you?”
“A desert canyon.”
“What happened?”
“He pushed me.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“I caught a ledge.”
Monica held up her right hand.
Two fingers were missing.
“I survived by hanging from one hand for twenty-three minutes.”
Claire stared.
“Why didn’t you go to police?”
“I did.”
“What happened?”
“They didn’t believe me.”
“Why?”
“Ethan had messages showing I was suicidal.”
Claire understood instantly.
Fake messages.
Manufactured evidence.
“Then Mara approached me.”
“What did she offer?”
“My life.”
Monica looked ashamed for the first time.
“She said Ethan would finish the job unless I helped them.”
“So you joined.”
“Yes.”
Maya’s voice hardened.
“You helped him kill people?”
“No.”
“Then what did you do?”
“Moved money. Created companies. Bought properties under shell names.”
“You profited.”
“Yes.”
Claire hated the calm confession.
“Where’s the ledger?”
Monica looked toward Mercer.
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“I need protection.”
“You’ll get it.”
“Federal.”
Mercer nodded reluctantly.
“Possible.”
“And immunity consideration.”
Maya exploded.
“You don’t get immunity.”
Monica met her eyes.
“Your mother is dead because I was too afraid to help her. I know what I am.”
Silence.
Claire leaned forward.
“Where is Ethan?”
“I don’t know.”
“My daughter?”
“No.”
“The ledger?”
Monica looked at Claire.
“In Ethan’s childhood home.”
Claire frowned.
“He told me his parents were dead.”
“Mother is.”
“Father?”
“Alive.”
Claire felt another layer crack open.
“Where?”
“West Virginia.”
“What’s his name?”
Monica gave it.
Thomas Parker.
Mercer searched.
Then shook his head.
“No record matching.”
“Because Parker isn’t Ethan’s real surname.”
Claire stared.
“What is?”
Monica answered.
“Coleman.”
Ethan Coleman.
Mara Coleman.
Claire thought of every document.
Every introduction.
Every story.
All invented.
“His father is Thomas Coleman?”
“Yes.”
“What does he know?”
“Everything.”
Mercer looked up.
“Everything?”
“He taught Ethan.”
The room fell silent.
Claire felt sick.
“His father taught him to murder women?”
Monica nodded.
“Thomas ran romance scams before the internet made them easy. Wealthy widows. Divorced women. Lonely women.”
Maya whispered, “Jesus.”
“Ethan grew up watching.”
“Why involve insurance?”
“Mara modernized it.”
Claire thought of the storage boxes.
A family business.
Mercer asked, “Why would the ledger be with Thomas?”
“Because Ethan trusts nobody else.”
“Not even Mara?”
“Especially not Mara.”
Claire thought about the marriage.
The resentment.
The jealousy.
The manipulation inside manipulation.
Monica looked toward Claire again.
“Ethan told me something about you.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“What?”
“He said you were the first target he regretted choosing.”
Claire hated the sting in her eyes.
“Don’t.”
“I’m not trying to comfort you.”
“Good.”
“He said you made him imagine another life.”
Claire’s jaw tightened.
“He still pushed me.”
“Yes.”
Monica leaned closer.
“That’s why you’re more dangerous to him than any other survivor.”
“Why?”
“Because Ethan can explain away a victim.”
Monica’s gaze hardened.
“But he can’t explain away the woman he almost loved.”
Claire’s temporary phone rang.
Unknown.
Everyone froze.
Mercer traced it.
Claire answered.
Ethan.
“You’ve been busy.”
Claire’s voice went cold.
“Where is Ava?”
“Alive.”
“Let me hear her.”
Ava’s voice came faintly.
“Mom.”
Claire shut her eyes.
“I’m coming.”
“No!” Ava shouted. “Don’t—”
The line shifted.
Ethan returned.
“Bring Monica.”
Claire looked at her.
Monica’s face went white.
Claire said, “Why?”
“Because she has something that belongs to me.”
“The ledger?”
Ethan laughed.
“No.”
Then Claire heard Ava crying in the background.
Ethan continued.
“Monica has the only thing that can prove who I really am.”
Claire looked at Monica.
“What?”
Monica’s hands began trembling.
For the first time since arriving, her composure vanished.

Ethan answered for her.
“My birth certificate.”
