Chapter 15 - What Vanessa Came Back ForPolice reached the house before Richard.

Vanessa was gone.
The front door stood open.
The basement camera had been disabled again.
But this time the walk-in freezer was empty.
Nothing appeared disturbed until Maria noticed the floor.
One frozen-food box had been moved.
Behind it was a narrow gap between two storage shelves.
Maria reached inside.
Detective Ward stopped her.
“Gloves.”
A technician retrieved a small waterproof pouch.
Inside were photocopies.
Bank records.
Names.
Dates.
Transfers.
Claire's evidence.
The proof she had hidden six years earlier.
Richard stared.
“She hid it here.”
Maria nodded slowly.
“Claire knew you hated the freezer.”
“What?”
“She used to joke that you would never voluntarily open that door.”
Richard remembered.
Claire teasing him.
You're afraid of a refrigerator.
He had laughed.
Now he wanted to collapse.
Claire had hidden the evidence somewhere she believed no one would search.
Vanessa must have discovered references to it in the old accident file.
But she didn't know the exact location.
Until Ethan found the red phone.
Perhaps he had also seen messages discussing the missing evidence.
Vanessa hadn't returned to the basement merely to plant evidence against Maria.
She had been searching.
Ward examined the documents.
“This is enough to establish Nathan's theft.”
“How much?”
“From what I'm seeing? Millions.”
Richard stared.
Six years of betrayal.
Nathan hadn't merely stolen money.
He had built an entire life around protecting the theft.
And Vanessa had helped.
“What does this have to do with Ethan now?”
Ward answered.
“Vanessa and Nathan resumed moving funds recently. If Ethan exposed the affair, Richard starts looking at Vanessa. If Richard looks at Vanessa, he may find the shell companies. If he finds those, he may reopen old financial records.”
Maria finished the thought.
“And find Claire.”
Ward nodded.
The freezer had not been about one secret.
It had been about all of them.
Richard's phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at him.
He answered on speaker.
Vanessa's voice.
“Richard.”
He felt nothing.
No love.
No shock.
Only cold.
“Where are you?”
“You found the documents?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa exhaled.
“Then there's no point pretending.”
Ward signaled technicians to trace the call.
Richard asked, “Why did you go back to Ethan?”
Silence.
“He told me.”
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Richard.”
“You opened the freezer.”
“I was afraid.”
“You saw him freezing.”
“I didn't know he was that bad.”
“You closed the door.”
“Nathan would have destroyed me.”
“So you chose yourself.”
“I thought Maria would come downstairs.”
Richard stared at Maria.
Vanessa continued.
“I knew she did laundry around that time.”
“You gambled my son's life on Maria's schedule.”
“I panicked.”
“You planted the key.”
“Yes.”
Maria closed her eyes.
“The second one too?”
“Yes.”
Richard asked, “Why call the police on Maria?”
“I didn't.”
“You accused her.”
“I needed time.”
“For what?”
“To leave.”
Ward wrote something.
Trace still running.
Richard lowered his voice.
“Did you cause Claire's accident?”
Vanessa went silent.
“Answer.”
“I didn't touch her car.”
“You chased her.”
“Nathan told me she had stolen documents.”
“They were evidence of his theft.”
“I didn't know everything then.”
“You knew enough.”
Vanessa started crying.
This time Richard believed the tears.
It changed nothing.
“I was twenty-nine,” she said. “Nathan controlled everything. My apartment. My money. My job. He told me Claire was trying to destroy him.”
“So you followed her.”
“Yes.”
“Did you photograph her?”
“Yes.”
“Threaten her?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Then you married me.”
The line became quiet.
“That wasn't supposed to happen.”
Richard almost laughed.
There it was again.
The sentence of cowards.
“What was supposed to happen?”
“I was supposed to get close to you.”
“Why?”
“To know whether Claire had told you anything.”
Maria's face tightened.
Richard said, “And instead?”
“I fell in love with you.”
He felt nothing.
“You don't know what love is.”
Vanessa's breathing changed.
“You loved me too.”
“I loved the person you invented.”
That hurt her.
He heard it.
Good.
“Where are you?”
Vanessa whispered,
“I'm sorry about Ethan.”
“Tell that to him.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Nathan is here.”
Every person in the basement froze.
Ward stepped forward.
Vanessa's next words came quickly.
“He found me before I could leave.”
A man's voice sounded faintly behind her.
Nathan.
“Hang up.”
Vanessa gasped.
Richard shouted, “Vanessa!”
A struggle.
Then Nathan took the phone.
“Richard.”
Richard's blood turned cold.
“Where are you?”
Nathan laughed softly.
“You still think this is about finding me.”
“What do you want?”
“The documents Claire hid.”
“You're too late.”
Silence.
Richard continued.
“The police have them.”
Nathan cursed.
Then Richard heard something else.
A small electronic beep.
Familiar.
Maria looked toward the security panel.
Her eyes widened.
“Richard.”
“What?”
“That beep.”
She pointed.
“The guesthouse alarm.”
Richard stopped.
The Cole property had a detached guesthouse beyond the pool.
Vacant.
Less than one hundred yards away.
Ward understood.
Police moved.
Then Nathan said,
“Too late.”
May you like
The line disconnected.
And through the basement window, Richard saw smoke rising behind the house.
