Chapter 2 - The Pointing FingerThe ambulance arrived eleven minutes later.

To Maria, it felt like eleven hours.

Paramedics rushed Ethan upstairs on a stretcher while Richard followed beside him, holding his son's hand. Vanessa stayed close enough to touch Richard's back but carefully avoided Ethan's eyes.

Maria noticed.

She noticed everything now.

The way Vanessa kept repeating the same sentence.

“I knew Maria was angry.”

The way she said it to Richard.

Then to the paramedic.

Then again when the police arrived.

“I knew she was angry with Ethan.”

Maria stood near the basement wall holding an ice pack against her cheek.

“I was never angry with him.”

Vanessa turned.

“You yelled at him yesterday.”

“I told him not to run near the pool.”

“You grabbed his arm.”

“He was about to fall.”

Vanessa looked at Officer Daniel Harper, who had just come through the basement door.

“You see?”

Maria almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the speed of it was unbelievable.

A story was being built around her in real time.

Officer Harper glanced at Maria.

“Ma'am, did you open the freezer?”

“Yes.”

“Was the boy already inside?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa interrupted.

“She knew exactly where to look.”

Maria stared at her.

“I heard him calling.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Through an insulated freezer door?”

Maria looked at the heavy door.

It was a good question.

Too good.

She remembered the faint voice.

The weak knock.

Had she heard him because the door hadn't been fully sealed?

She walked closer.

Officer Harper stopped her.

“Please don't touch anything.”

Maria pointed.

“The handle. When I pulled it, it felt stuck.”

“Locked?”

“I don't know. Sealed.”

Vanessa's voice came quietly from behind her.

“Or maybe you unlocked it.”

Maria turned.

Richard had returned from upstairs.

His face looked gray.

“The ambulance is taking him to St. Catherine's.”

Maria stepped toward him.

“I need you to understand. I did not hurt Ethan.”

Richard's jaw tightened.

“I saw him in your arms.”

“Because I got him out.”

“And Vanessa says—”

“Vanessa wasn't even here.”

Everyone became silent.

Richard looked toward his wife.

Vanessa blinked.

“What?”

“You told me you were meeting Caroline.”

“I was.”

“Then how did you see Maria lock Ethan in the freezer?”

Vanessa's expression changed smoothly.

“I didn't say I physically watched her do it.”

“Yes, you did,” Maria said.

Vanessa's eyes sharpened.

“I meant I saw how she was behaving before I left.”

“That isn't what you said.”

Richard rubbed both hands over his face.

“Enough.”

“Richard—”

“My son almost froze to death.”

His voice cracked on the final words.

Maria stopped.

For the first time, she saw something beneath his anger.

Pure terror.

Richard had entered the basement believing he was about to lose his child.

Maria understood why he had reacted.

She did not forgive the slap.

But she understood the panic.

Officer Harper crouched near the freezer.

“Does this door lock from the outside?”

Maria nodded.

“There is a safety latch.”

“Key?”

“There's usually one hanging inside the pantry cabinet.”

Vanessa spoke.

“Usually?”

Maria looked at her.

Vanessa gave a small shrug.

“I mean, if Maria didn't move it.”

Officer Harper stood.

“Who has access to the basement?”

“Everyone,” Richard said.

“Ethan?”

Richard shook his head.

“He's eight. He doesn't come down here alone.”

Vanessa's face softened.

“He's curious.”

Richard turned toward her.

Vanessa added quickly, “Children do things they're told not to do.”

Maria saw it again.

The change.

Only this time Richard seemed to see it too.

“Five minutes ago you said Maria locked him in.”

Vanessa's lips parted.

“I was frightened.”

Officer Harper raised a hand.

“Let's keep everyone separated until we establish a timeline.”

A second officer approached.

“Sir?”

He held something inside a clear evidence bag.

A small brass key.

Maria recognized it immediately.

The freezer key.

Officer Harper frowned.

“Where did you find that?”

The officer looked directly at Maria.

“In the laundry basket.”

Maria stopped breathing.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Richard stared.

“No,” Maria said.

The officer lifted the bag.

The key gleamed under the basement light.

“I didn't put that there.”

No one answered.

“I put the basket down after I heard Ethan.”

Officer Harper's voice became more formal.

“Ms. Maria, I'm going to need you to stay here while we sort this out.”

Vanessa stepped closer to Richard.

“I told you.”

Maria looked at her.

Vanessa's face showed shock.

Fear.

Concern.

Everything a loving stepmother should show.

But her right hand rested against her thigh.

And Maria noticed something she had never paid attention to before.

A small fresh cut across Vanessa's index finger.

Maria's eyes moved toward the steel freezer handle.

Near the latch was a thin red smear.

Blood.

May you like

Vanessa followed her gaze.

And slowly curled her injured finger into her palm.
