Chapter 18 - The Freezer TrapThe warehouse looked dead from the road.

Broken exterior lights.
Faded company sign.
Dark loading bays.
But thermal imaging showed movement inside.
Three people.
One was small.
Ethan.
Police surrounded the property quietly.
Nathan sent instructions at 11:42.
Richard was to enter alone carrying Claire's file.
No police.
No Maria.
No tricks.
Richard agreed.
Ward fitted him with a microphone.
“You do exactly what we say.”
Richard looked at her.
“If I see Ethan—”
“You follow instructions.”
“If Nathan touches him—”
“Richard.”
Ward held his gaze.
“Your job is not to be a hero. Your job is to keep Nathan talking until my team has a clean entry.”
Richard nodded.
Maria stepped toward him.
“Bring him back.”
“I will.”
He entered the warehouse.
The air smelled of metal, dust, and old refrigeration coolant.
Richard followed a line of emergency lights.
“Nathan?”
A voice echoed.
“Keep walking.”
He entered the main cold-storage corridor.
Nathan stood twenty feet away.
Gun in hand.
Ethan sat on a wooden pallet beside him.
His pale-blue sweater was dirty.
But he was alive.
“Dad!”
Richard stopped.
“I'm here.”
Nathan pressed the gun closer to Ethan.
“File.”
Richard held up the envelope.
“Let him come to me.”
Nathan laughed.
“You think this is a movie?”
“You asked for the evidence.”
“I asked for all of it.”
“This is all.”
“Maria kept copies.”
“She didn't.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“She learned from Claire.”
“Maria wants Ethan alive.”
“So do I.”
Richard almost laughed.
“You put him in a freezer.”
“I needed five minutes.”
“He nearly died.”
“Vanessa left him.”
Nathan's eyes flashed.
“She could have opened the door.”
Richard stared.
“So that's your defense?”
“My defense is that everyone turned on me.”
“Claire discovered you.”
“She was going to destroy the company.”
“You stole from it.”
“I built it with you!”
“You stole.”
Nathan shouted.
“I DESERVED MORE!”
The words echoed.
Ethan flinched.
Richard remained still.
There.
The real Nathan.
Not the charming partner.
Not the best friend.
A man who believed wanting something meant owning it.
Richard said, “Did you cause Claire's crash?”
Nathan's expression changed.
“No.”
“You chased her.”
“Vanessa did.”
“You told her to.”
“I wanted the files.”
“You knew Claire was terrified.”
“She should have stopped.”
Richard felt rage rise.
He forced it down.
Keep him talking.
“Why Vanessa?”
Nathan smiled faintly.
“She was useful.”
“You introduced her to me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To watch you.”
Richard's stomach twisted.
“And when she married me?”
Nathan laughed.
“That was unexpected.”
“Did you tell her to?”
“No.”
Richard believed him.
Nathan's face became bitter.
“She fell in love with your house. Your money. Your life.”
“And you kept sleeping with her.”
“That bothered you?”
“It disgusts me.”
Nathan smiled.
“Interesting moral line after marrying her.”
Richard looked at Ethan.
“Let him go.”
“The file first.”
Richard moved closer.
Nathan aimed the gun.
“Stop.”
Richard stopped.
He placed the envelope on the floor.
“Kicked it over.”
Richard did.
Nathan picked it up.
Opened it.
Inside were blank pages.
His face changed.
“You.”
Richard heard Ward in his earpiece.
Move.
Nathan raised the gun.
Police shattered the side doors.
“DROP THE WEAPON!”
Nathan grabbed Ethan.
Richard ran.
The gun fired.
A bullet struck metal.
Ethan screamed.
Nathan dragged him backward toward an open industrial freezer.
Cold vapor poured through the doorway.
Richard saw the plan instantly.
Nathan shoved Ethan inside.
Richard tackled him.
The gun slid across the floor.
Nathan punched Richard.
Richard hit back.
Years of friendship disappeared beneath fists, blood, and rage.
Nathan reached for the gun.
Maria appeared from the side corridor.
Richard stared.
She wasn't supposed to be inside.
Maria kicked the gun away.
Nathan grabbed her.
He pulled a utility knife from his belt and pressed it against her throat.
“Back up.”
Police froze.
Richard's heart stopped.
Then Ethan emerged behind Nathan.
Still shaking.
Still terrified.
But holding the heavy freezer door.
“Maria!”
Nathan turned.
That second was enough.
Maria drove her elbow into his ribs.
Richard lunged.
Police tackled Nathan.
The knife hit the floor.
Hands cuffed him.
Nathan screamed curses.
Richard didn't listen.
He ran to Ethan.
His son threw himself into his arms.
Maria sank against the wall, breathing hard.
Detective Ward approached her.
“You ignored my order.”
Maria nodded.
Ward looked toward Ethan.
“Good call.”
Nathan was dragged away.
For the first time in two days, Richard believed the nightmare might finally be over.
Then his phone rang.
Vanessa.
He almost ignored it.
Maria looked at the screen.
“Answer.”
Richard did.
Vanessa was crying.
“Richard.”
“What?”
“Don't let them take Nathan anywhere.”
Richard frowned.
“Why?”
“You don't understand.”
“Understand what?”
Vanessa's next words made every victory in the warehouse suddenly feel incomplete.
“Nathan didn't start this.”
Richard went still.
“Who did?”
May you like
Vanessa whispered,
“Thomas Keller did.”
