Chapter 11 - Richard Wanted Them TogetherPolice removed the transmitter.

Too late.
Richard had heard nearly every confession.
Barrett admitting Bellwether.
Claudia admitting Novus Meridian.
Odette admitting contact.
Vaughn discussing the audit.
Everyone had handed him leverage.
Tristan stared at the device.
“He wanted us talking.”
Detective Miles nodded.
“Family arguments make good intelligence.”
Claudia looked furious.
“How long was it there?”
Technician examined adhesive.
“Days, maybe weeks.”
Vaughn’s face tightened.
“Someone entered this study.”
House staff records were checked.
Cleaners.
Maintenance.
Family.
Odette.
She shook her head.
“I didn’t plant it.”
Tristan believed that particular denial.
She was terrible at hiding fear now.
Maren asked:
“What does Richard gain from recordings?”
Claudia answered:
“Insurance.”
Barrett laughed bitterly.
“He already has enough.”
“No,” Vaughn said.
“He needs us discredited.”
Tristan looked at him.
“Why?”
“If Richard simply steals patents or money, we prosecute him.”
“Yes.”
“But if he can show every Carroway participating in secret deals…”
Claudia finished:
“He makes himself look like one corrupt player among many.”
Exactly.
Barrett secretly owned Bellwether.
Claudia secretly controlled Novus.
Odette staged an assault.
Vaughn had investigated his own son without disclosure.
Celeste’s forged signature complicated ownership.
Tristan had actually punched his father.
Richard could construct a story where nobody was innocent.
Then truth became negotiable.
At 7:34, the countdown continued.
Twenty-six minutes.
The analyst found the trigger server.
Hosted overseas.
Police could not simply shut it down.
But Nathan had built a secondary authentication key into the package.
“If we get his token, we may stop public release.”
Nathan was still in hospital.
His hardware security key?
Missing.
Last seen at his desk.
Search teams found nothing.
Odette whispered:
“Richard has it.”
Tristan looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“He collects physical keys.”
Vaughn frowned.
“Why?”
“He doesn’t trust digital access alone.”
Odette remembered seeing a small metal case in Richard’s office.
USB keys.
Cards.
Hardware tokens.
Each labeled with initials.
“He called them his insurance policies.”
Claudia’s eyes narrowed.
“I’ve seen that case.”
“When?”
“Last week.”
“Where?”
“His private office.”
“Location?”
She hesitated.
Vaughn laughed.
“You’re still protecting him?”
“No.”
“Then where?”
“Not his law office.”
She took a breath.
“A townhouse in German Village.”
Police moved immediately.
Search warrant fast-tracked through fraud evidence.
At 7:46, entry team reached the address.
Empty.
Computer equipment gone.
But the metal case remained.
Open.
Most tokens removed.
One inside.
NC
Nathan Cole.
Tristan felt hope.
Technician connected it remotely.
Authentication accepted.
7:51.
They accessed the release package.
Could not delete it.
But could delay.
How long?
“Twenty-four hours.”
Vaughn said:
“Do it.”
Claudia interrupted.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned.
“If you delay the package, Richard knows we have Nathan’s key.”
“So?”
“He’ll assume Nathan talked.”
“He has.”
“He’ll go after him.”
Police already guarded Nathan.
Claudia shook her head.
“You’re thinking physically.”
“What else?”
“He has files on Nathan’s daughter.”
Tristan stared.
“What files?”
“Scholarship fraud.”
Nobody understood.
Claudia explained.
Nathan’s daughter, Olivia, had received a prestigious university scholarship.
Richard helped arrange application materials years earlier.
Maybe false income records.
Maybe manipulated recommendations.
Enough to threaten her education.
Again.
Leverage tied to family.
Vaughn said:
“Then we protect her with truth.”
Claudia looked at him.
“Easy to say when it isn’t your daughter.”
Tristan turned.
“That’s exactly how Richard keeps everyone.”
Silence.
“Everyone thinks their secret is uniquely unbearable.”
He looked at Odette.
“Ethan’s debt.”
Nathan.
“Olivia’s scholarship.”
Barrett.
“Your theft.”
Claudia.
“Your secret company.”
Then himself.
“My anger at Dad.”
Vaughn’s expression softened slightly.
Tristan continued.
“If we keep protecting individual secrets, Richard wins forever.”
Detective Miles nodded.
“So what are you suggesting?”
“Full disclosure.”
Barrett laughed.
“You want to publicly admit Bellwether?”
“Yes.”
“You’ll destroy the family.”
“No.”
Tristan looked at him.
“You did damage when you stole.”
“Tristan—”
“Claudia discloses Novus.”
She stared.
“Dad releases the audit.”
Vaughn nodded slowly.
“Odette gives police everything.”
Her face crumpled.
“And Ethan?”
“We tell the truth about his debt too.”
She looked terrified.
“He could be hurt.”
Miles intervened.
“If there are threats, law enforcement can act.”
Odette laughed bitterly.
“You think police can protect everyone?”
“No.”
Tristan answered before Miles could.
“But secrecy hasn’t protected anyone either.”
That silenced her.
At 7:55, they delayed the release.
New countdown:
23:59:59.
One day.
Richard sent a message immediately.
Bad choice.
Then:
You think confession saves you?
Tristan typed back himself.
No. It just makes you useless.
Three dots appeared.
Stopped.
Appeared again.
Then Richard replied:
Ask your father what happened to Henry Vale’s missing three million.
Vaughn went still.
Tristan looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Vaughn didn’t answer.
May you like
Richard sent one final line:
Because Henry stole it. But Arthur stole it back.
