Chapter 15 - The Three Ways Tristan Could FallOdette listed them.

First:

Financial misconduct.

Richard built records making Tristan appear responsible for the Bellwether transfers.

If Vaughn confronted him publicly, board suspension.

Second:

Drug possession.

Tristan stared.

“What?”

Odette cried.

“He gave me pills.”

“What pills?”

“Prescription opioids.”

“Where?”

“I never used them.”

“Where?”

She looked down.

“In our house.”

Tristan stood.

“Where?”

“Garage cabinet.”

Police searched immediately.

A sealed bottle.

Not prescribed to Tristan.

Placed behind tools.

Fingerprints wiped.

Enough to create suspicion during an anonymous tip.

Tristan felt sick.

“You planted drugs in our home.”

“I never called anyone.”

“That matters?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

Her face collapsed.

Third method:

Domestic violence.

Tristan stared.

Odette’s voice became almost inaudible.

“Richard wanted me to photograph bruises.”

“Whose bruises?”

“Mine.”

Tristan felt cold.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I couldn’t.”

“But framing Dad was easier?”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I convinced myself Vaughn was already hurting you.”

Silence.

She had moralized the target.

Vaughn became cruel father.

Controlling chairman.

Enemy.

Therefore hurting him felt less wrong.

Tristan looked away.

That was exactly how Richard worked.

He didn’t ask people to betray someone they loved as a whole person.

He reduced the target into a story.

Vaughn the tyrant.

Tristan the spoiled heir.

Barrett the overlooked brother.

Claudia the unappreciated daughter.

Odette the desperate sister.

Once each person believed the story, the next action became easier.

“Why didn’t you use the other plans?”

“Richard kept changing timing.”

“So tonight?”

“He said it had to be emotional.”

“Why?”

“Because if you attacked Dad in front of family, nobody could call it a technical misunderstanding.”

The witnesses mattered.

Celeste.

Maren.

Cousins.

Richard wanted a room full of people seeing Tristan explode.

He had nearly succeeded.

Tristan looked at his right hand.

Bruised knuckles.

He had succeeded partly.

Tristan had hit Vaughn.

No fabrication changed that.

“I attacked him.”

Odette looked up.

“Because I lied.”

“I still attacked him.”

“You thought he—”

“I know what I thought.”

He looked at her.

“But anger was mine.”

That distinction mattered.

He would not let Richard own his choices entirely.

Later, Tristan approached Vaughn.

His father was alone in the garden.

“You should press charges.”

Vaughn looked at him.

“For the punch?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want to.”

“That’s not accountability.”

Vaughn almost smiled.

“You’ve been spending too much time with prosecutors.”

“I hit you.”

“Yes.”

“I could have seriously hurt you.”

“You didn’t.”

“That’s luck.”

Vaughn considered.

“You want consequences?”

“I want truth.”

Vaughn nodded.

“Then tell the board.”

Tristan frowned.

“What?”

“Tomorrow.”

“Tell them I assaulted you?”

“Yes.”

“You’d do that?”

“You just asked for accountability.”

Tristan exhaled.

His father was right.

He hated it.

Good sign.

Then Vaughn said:

“I owe you one too.”

“For what?”

“I investigated you without telling you.”

“You thought I was stealing.”

“Yes.”

“Reasonable.”

“No.”

Tristan looked at him.

Vaughn continued.

“Suspicion was reasonable.”

He paused.

“Following you without conversation was cowardice.”

Tristan stared.

Vaughn almost never used that word about himself.

“I told myself I needed evidence.”

“Maybe you did.”

“I also didn’t want to hear you deny it if I wasn’t ready to believe you.”

That hurt.

“But you believed me eventually.”

“After technology proved it.”

Tristan nodded.

They stood silently.

Then Vaughn said:

“Richard didn’t invent our problems.”

“No.”

“He used them.”

“Yes.”

“So we fix ours even if he goes to prison.”

Tristan looked at his father.

“Agreed.”

The next morning, emergency board session.

Everything disclosed.

Barrett admitted unauthorized Bellwether control.

Claudia disclosed Novus Meridian.

Tristan disclosed striking Vaughn.

Vaughn disclosed undisclosed surveillance of Tristan.

The board was stunned.

Lawyers horrified.

Shares temporarily halted.

But because the family spoke before Richard’s release package, his files landed differently.

Not as revelation.

As corroborating evidence mixed with forged claims.

The scandal still hurt.

But it did not destroy Carroway.

Then Richard’s attorneys made a move nobody expected.

They released an audio recording.

Odette.

Speaking to Richard three months earlier.

Her voice:

“If Tristan ever finds out I married him because of you, he’ll destroy me.”

Tristan froze.

Odette went white.

The recording continued.

Richard:

“Then make sure he never finds out.”

The entire room turned toward her.

Tristan’s voice became quiet.

“You told me meeting me was an accident.”

Odette cried.

“It became real.”

He stared.

“Was any of it real at the beginning?”

She couldn’t answer.

And somehow, after corporate fraud, blackmail, forged shares, and hidden companies—

that silence hurt him most.
