Chapter 8 - The File That Made Tristan Look GuiltyThe forensic team mirrored Nathan’s laptop without disconnecting it.

At 3:04 a.m., Vaughn, Tristan, Maren, and Barrett arrived at Carroway headquarters under police supervision.
Odette stayed behind with Celeste and an attorney.
Tristan hated leaving her outside his sight.
But at least she was no longer controlling the room.
The countdown continued.
04:55:31
Detective Serena Miles stood beside a digital analyst.
“We can’t stop the release yet without risking activation.”
“What releases?” Tristan asked.
“Multiple packages.”
“To whom?”
“Federal regulators. Financial journalists. Board members. Lenders.”
Barrett cursed.
The analyst opened a copied directory.
Emails.
Bank records.
Approval logs.
Signed memos.
All carrying Tristan’s name.
The story they created was devastating.
Tristan secretly approved vendor payments.
Those payments funded Bellwether.
Bellwether acquired Hartwell.
Then Tristan planned to force Carroway to buy Hartwell at inflated value.
Tristan stared.
“They made me Barrett.”
Vaughn nodded.
They took Barrett’s actual scheme and transferred intent to Tristan.
Barrett whispered:
“Richard planned this from the beginning.”
Vaughn looked at him.
“You still think you were his partner?”
Barrett did not answer.
Detective Miles asked:
“Can you prove these records are fake?”
Vaughn gestured toward the audit.
“We can prove some authentication conflicts.”
“Some?”
“Yes.”
“That may not be enough before public release.”
Exactly Richard’s strategy.
Truth would take weeks.
Scandal took seconds.
Tristan knew the board.
If these files hit the press at eight, shares would collapse before lunch.
Banks might freeze lending.
Partners would panic.
Even if he was cleared later, the damage could be permanent.
“Can we upload our audit first?” Maren asked.
Vaughn considered.
The analyst shook his head.
“You can, but that creates competing claims.”
Barrett said:
“Better than silence.”
Tristan looked toward his uncle.
“You’re worried about your money.”
Barrett didn’t deny it.
“Hartwell employs twelve hundred people.”
“And you own it secretly.”
“Yes.”
“But employees still exist.”
That was true.
Bad people could hide behind legitimate consequences.
If Carroway collapsed, thousands of innocent employees suffered.
Richard knew that.
It made the family more likely to negotiate.
Tristan asked:
“Where is Nathan?”
Miles answered:
“Phone off.”
“Home?”
“Empty.”
“Family?”
“Wife says he left two days ago for a work emergency.”
Vaughn’s face tightened.
“He planned escape.”
Then the analyst found a hidden audio file.
Timestamped thirty minutes earlier.
Nathan’s voice.
“If you’re hearing this, Richard probably told you I betrayed Carroway.”
Everyone leaned closer.
Nathan sounded exhausted.
“I did.”
Tristan clenched his jaw.
“But not for the reason he’ll claim.”
Vaughn looked toward the screen.
Nathan continued:
“Ten years ago Richard got me out of prison.”
Odette had told the truth.
“He said I owed him one favor.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“One favor became a job recommendation.”
Barrett closed his eyes.
Then access.
Then cloned credentials.
Then hidden servers.
Nathan described years of small requests.
“Most looked harmless.”
Reset a password.
Create a temporary administrator key.
Delete an access log.
Move a server backup.
Each one small.
Until Nathan understood the pattern.
“I tried to stop last year.”
Tristan listened.
“Richard sent me photographs of my daughter outside school.”
Silence.
“He said he didn’t need me forever. Just until Hartwell.”
Nathan began crying.
“I’m sorry, Tristan.”
Tristan looked away.
“I’m sorry, Vaughn.”
Then Nathan’s voice changed.
“If Richard is releasing the package, he thinks I’m dead.”
Everyone froze.
Miles leaned closer.
Nathan continued:
“I told him I put the final evidence in the release package.”
“But I didn’t.”
Vaughn whispered:
“What evidence?”
Nathan answered as if he heard him.
“The original Bellwether transfer authorization.”
Barrett’s face changed.
“That doesn’t exist.”
Nathan continued:
“It does.”
Vaughn looked at Barrett.
The audio played.
“And it doesn’t have Tristan’s signature.”
Barrett went pale.
“It has the signature of the person who first authorized Richard Vale to move Carroway funds.”
Tristan’s pulse quickened.
Nathan paused.
“I hid it where Richard would never look.”
Then:
“Inside the backup camera server at Vaughn’s house.”
Everyone stared.
The same camera system Odette thought had been removed.
The camera that exposed her.
Had been storing something else.
Vaughn immediately called home security.
But Nathan’s audio continued.
“There’s one more thing.”
His voice dropped.
“The signature isn’t Barrett’s.”
Barrett looked confused.
Tristan looked at Vaughn.
“Then whose?”
Nathan answered:
May you like
“Arthur Carroway.”
Their dead grandfather.
