Chapter 1 - The Woman Beside SophieSophie’s eyes snapped open.

The dark cloth was already pressed against the lower part of her mouth.

Her nose remained clear, but panic exploded across her face.

Both hands shot upward.

Her fingers closed around Camille’s wrist.

“Mmm—!”

Camille leaned closer.

“Stop.”

Her voice was low.

Controlled.

Her eyes flicked toward the aisle.

Then back to Sophie.

Sophie twisted toward the window.

Her knees pulled inward.

Her shoes pushed hard against the cabin floor.

Tears filled her eyes almost instantly.

Camille tightened her jaw.

“Don’t make this harder.”

Sophie tried again to turn away.

Her fingers remained locked around Camille’s wrist.

Then the strength began leaving them.

Not all at once.

Her grip loosened first.

One hand slipped.

Then the other.

Her blinking slowed.

Her head tilted sideways.

And her body sagged against the airplane seat.

Three rows away, Claire Cross looked up.

At first, she saw only Sophie’s head leaning strangely toward the window.

Then she saw Camille’s hand.

The cloth.

Claire was moving before her mind finished processing it.

“HEY!”

Passengers turned.

Claire shoved past the man seated beside her and rushed forward.

She caught Camille’s wrist and yanked it away from Sophie.

“What are you doing?!”

Camille stumbled into the aisle.

A flash of pure panic crossed her face.

Then it vanished.

She straightened her blouse.

Lifted her chin.

And looked offended.

“What is wrong with you?”

Claire pointed toward Sophie.

Her daughter’s eyes were closed.

Her breathing looked shallow but steady.

“What did you do to her?”

Camille’s expression hardened.

“Get away from us.”

“Us?”

Camille pointed toward Sophie.

“She’s my daughter.”

Claire froze.

For one second, the noise inside the cabin disappeared.

Passengers stared.

A flight attendant was already coming down the aisle.

Claire looked at Sophie.

Then Camille.

Then Sophie again.

“You…”

Her voice dropped.

“You’re her mother?”

“Yes.”

Camille answered instantly.

No hesitation.

Claire narrowed her eyes.

“You’re sure?”

Camille looked almost insulted.

“Of course I’m sure.”

She folded her arms.

“She’s my daughter.”

Claire became very still.

Then she reached into her purse.

Camille’s eyes followed the movement.

Claire removed a small cardholder.

From it, she pulled Sophie’s Visa card—the prepaid travel card Claire kept whenever Sophie flew.

Claire raised it.

Camille’s gaze dropped.

Half a second.

That was all.

But Claire saw the confidence break.

“Then…”

Claire stepped closer.

“…you just lied to the wrong person.”

Camille looked up.

Claire’s voice became ice.

“I’m Sophie’s mother.”

The color drained from Camille’s face.

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

The flight attendant reached them.

“What’s happening?”

Claire pointed toward Sophie.

“This woman had something over my daughter’s mouth.”

Camille immediately shook her head.

“She’s confused.”

Claire turned.

“Excuse me?”

Camille recovered enough to speak.

“This is a family matter.”

Claire stared at her.

“You just said Sophie was your daughter.”

“She is.”

Claire held up the card again.

“No.”

Passengers began whispering.

The flight attendant’s expression changed.

“Ma’am, step into the aisle.”

Camille didn’t move.

A second crew member arrived.

Claire leaned toward Sophie.

“Sophie?”

No response.

Her heart slammed.

“Sophie, honey?”

She touched her daughter’s cheek.

Warm.

Breathing.

Still no response.

The flight attendant called for any medical professional on board.

A middle-aged doctor seated farther back came forward.

Camille tried to step away.

The second attendant blocked her.

“Please remain where you are.”

“I need the restroom.”

“No.”

Camille looked toward the front of the plane.

Then the rear.

Calculating.

Claire saw it.

“You’re not going anywhere.”

Camille’s eyes flashed.

“You don’t know what you’re interfering with.”

Claire stared.

“What did you say?”

Camille immediately looked away.

The doctor checked Sophie.

Pulse.

Breathing.

Responsiveness.

“She’s breathing normally.”

Claire gripped the seat.

“Why isn’t she waking up?”

“I don’t know yet.”

Those words terrified her more than anything.

The captain was notified.

The flight had left Boston less than thirty minutes earlier.

They would turn back.

Claire barely heard the announcement.

She sat beside Sophie after the crew moved Camille several rows away under observation.

Claire held her daughter’s hand.

“Sophie.”

A tiny movement.

Claire leaned closer.

“Sophie?”

Her eyelids fluttered.

Relief hit so violently Claire almost cried out.

Sophie opened her eyes halfway.

“Mom?”

“I’m here.”

Sophie tried to lift her head.

Claire stopped her.

“Don’t move too fast.”

Sophie looked around.

Then suddenly remembered.

Her fingers tightened around Claire’s.

“That woman.”

“I know.”

“She wanted my bag.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

Sophie’s eyes were heavy.

“She kept asking…”

Her voice faded.

Claire leaned closer.

“Asking what?”

Sophie swallowed.

“The blue envelope.”

Claire stared.

“What blue envelope?”

Sophie’s eyes closed again.

Claire turned toward Camille.

For the first time, Camille looked truly afraid.

Not because she had been caught.

Because Sophie had spoken.

A flight attendant approached carrying Camille’s purse in a clear security bag.

“We found identification.”

Claire looked up.

The attendant hesitated.

“Her name is Camille Rhodes.”

Claire had never heard it.

Then the attendant handed Claire something else.

A printed airline document found inside Camille’s purse.

Claire looked down.

Her stomach dropped.

It was a copy of Sophie’s itinerary.

Same flight.

Same confirmation number.

And beside Sophie’s name was a note:

MINOR TRANSFER AUTHORIZED BY MOTHER — CLAIRE CROSS.

Claire stared at her own name.

Then at the signature below it.

It looked almost perfect.

But she had never signed it.

Someone had not merely put Camille beside Sophie.

May you like

Someone had prepared paperwork to make it look as though Claire wanted her there.

And only a handful of people had ever seen Claire sign her full legal name.
