Chapter 9 - Lorraine’s OfferLorraine Cross arrived at Claire’s home that evening without invitation.

She stood outside the door in a cream coat, perfectly composed.
Claire watched through the camera.
Daniel was still inside.
He went pale.
“Don’t let her in.”
Claire looked at him.
“Scared of your mother?”
“Yes.”
For once, honest.
Claire opened the door but did not step aside.
Lorraine smiled.
“Claire.”
“No.”
Lorraine’s smile faded.
“We need to speak.”
“You can speak from there.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
Lorraine glanced past her.
Saw Daniel.
Her expression changed.
“You.”
Daniel remained still.
Lorraine understood instantly.
“He told you.”
“Enough.”
Lorraine looked at Claire.
“Then you know the sale has to happen.”
Claire almost laughed.
“That’s why you came?”
“I came to stop this family from destroying itself.”
“You put Camille beside Sophie.”
Lorraine’s jaw tightened.
“I told Camille to recover stolen property.”
“My daughter didn’t steal anything.”
“She removed documents from my home.”
“Documents addressed to me.”
Lorraine ignored that.
“I did not tell Camille to harm Sophie.”
Claire believed that might be technically true.
It did not help.
“You forged my signature.”
“I did not.”
“Arthur’s?”
Lorraine’s face remained controlled.
“Arthur’s health was failing.”
“Do not use his heart disease to turn forgery into consent.”
Lorraine’s eyes sharpened.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mom, stop.”
She turned.
“After everything I’ve done for you?”
Daniel flinched.
Claire saw it.
The sentence that controlled him.
Lorraine continued.
“I paid your debts.”
“With Sophie’s money,” Claire said.
Lorraine’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You found the audit.”
Claire nodded.
Lorraine looked tired for the first time.
“Arthur never understood timing.”
“He understood theft.”
“It wasn’t theft.”
“What was it?”
“Temporary internal borrowing.”
“From a child.”
“From family assets.”
“Sophie’s assets.”
Lorraine snapped:
“She was five!”
Claire stared.
Lorraine realized what she had said.
There.
The philosophy.
A child didn’t count as an owner because she was a child.
Lorraine continued.
“Money was sitting idle while the company needed liquidity.”
“So you took it.”
“I used it.”
“And never returned $4.6 million.”
“I was going to.”
“With the sale.”
“Yes.”
Claire almost admired the honesty.
“So Harbor Point sells.”
“Everyone gets made whole.”
“You clear twelve million in personal debt.”
Lorraine’s lips tightened.
“You receive eight million.”
Silence.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You told me two.”
Lorraine stared at him.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You were going to give me five hundred thousand and keep eight million.”
“Daniel—”
“No.”
For once, he interrupted her.
Lorraine’s face hardened.
Claire said:
“Camille gets six hundred thousand.”
Lorraine looked toward Claire again.
“You’ve been busy.”
“Arthur was.”
That hurt her.
Lorraine’s eyes flickered.
Then she said:
“I’ll make you an offer.”
Claire almost laughed.
“No.”
“You haven’t heard it.”
“I don’t need to.”
Lorraine continued anyway.
“Ten million into Sophie’s trust.”
Claire froze.
Daniel stared.
“Ten?”
“Immediately after closing.”
Claire said:
“You owe her 4.6.”
“I’ll more than double it.”
“In exchange for me approving the sale.”
“Yes.”
Maya, listening from the kitchen, stepped into view.
“That sounds remarkably like an inducement to approve a transaction involving trust property.”
Lorraine’s expression darkened.
“Of course you’re here.”
Maya smiled politely.
“Always charming, Lorraine.”
Lorraine looked at Claire.
“Think like a mother.”
Claire’s anger flashed.
“I am.”
“Ten million protects Sophie.”
“No. Ten million buys your freedom from the consequences of stealing four.”
Lorraine’s jaw tightened.
“The company survives.”
“Maybe.”
“Daniel avoids criminal exposure.”
Daniel stared at her.
There.
The second leverage point.
“Mom.”
Lorraine ignored him.
“Your daughter avoids years of public scandal.”
Claire stepped forward.
“You used her on an airplane.”
“I told you, I did not authorize—”
“You authorized everything before the moment you want to disown.”
Lorraine went silent.
Claire continued.
“You forged documents.”
“You collected custody material.”
“You paid Daniel for information.”
“You sent Camille after Arthur’s evidence.”
“And now you’re telling me to think like a mother.”
Lorraine’s face finally cracked.
“What do you want?”
“The truth.”
“That’s childish.”
Claire smiled without warmth.
“No.”
“It’s expensive.”
Lorraine stared.
Claire continued.
“More expensive than you can afford.”
She closed the door.
Daniel remained in the foyer.
He looked stunned.
Then Claire’s phone buzzed.
Maya had received an emergency filing from NorthBridge.
They were asking a court to declare Parcel Seven part of Cross Harbor Properties based on the disputed amendment.
The sale meeting tomorrow was not ceremonial.
Lorraine was trying to legalize the forgery before Claire could stop the transaction.

The fight had moved from the airplane to the property records.
But Sophie was still at its center.
