Chapter 14 - Daniel Gave the Board the One Thing Lorraine FearedThe extraordinary board meeting happened five days later.

Lorraine entered first.

Daniel arrived separately.

That alone sent a message.

Claire attended as Sophie’s trustee.

Maya sat behind her.

NorthBridge representatives joined remotely.

The board chair opened with the disputed Parcel Seven transfer.

Then the trust audit.

Then Arthur’s recordings.

Lorraine’s attorneys objected to almost everything.

The chair allowed the evidence for internal governance review.

Then Daniel spoke.

His mother turned toward him.

He looked terrified.

Claire noticed his hands shaking beneath the table.

“Daniel?”

the chair said.

He stood.

“My father asked me to oppose the Harbor sale before he died.”

Lorraine’s jaw tightened.

Daniel continued.

“I refused because my mother had paid personal debts for me.”

Murmurs.

“I later learned some of those funds came from distributions that should have gone to Sophie’s trust.”

Lorraine whispered:

“Daniel.”

He kept going.

“I gave my mother Claire’s travel information.”

Lorraine’s face changed.

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“I also gave her a copy of Claire’s signature months ago.”

The room went silent.

Lorraine stood.

“My attorney advised—”

The chair stopped her.

“Sit down.”

She did.

Daniel continued.

“I knew my mother wanted evidence Arthur left behind.”

“After Sophie told me she found a blue envelope, I called Lorraine.”

Claire watched him.

Every sentence hurt him.

Good.

Truth sometimes should.

“I did not know Camille Rhodes would physically interfere with Sophie.”

He swallowed.

“But I knew Lorraine intended to send someone after the envelope.”

No loophole.

No technical defense.

Then:

“I chose my own protection over my daughter’s safety.”

Lorraine closed her eyes.

Daniel sat.

The board chair looked toward Lorraine.

“Mrs. Cross?”

She said nothing.

Then the chair presented the forensic signature analysis.

Arthur’s signature forged.

Daniel’s signature forged.

Claire’s signature forged on the travel authorization.

Different documents.

Same pattern.

Lorraine’s attorneys requested adjournment.

Denied.

The board voted.

Lorraine removed immediately from Harbor Point negotiations pending investigation.

Her authority over the sale suspended.

Independent committee appointed.

NorthBridge representatives ended the call without comment.

Claire knew what that meant.

The deal was dying.

Lorraine stared at Daniel.

Not Claire.

Daniel looked back.

For the first time, he did not lower his eyes.

After the meeting, Lorraine cornered him in the hallway.

Claire remained several feet away.

“You destroyed your father’s company.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“You handed it to strangers.”

“No.”

“After everything I did for you.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then opened them.

“You keep saying that like help bought me.”

Lorraine’s face hardened.

“I am your mother.”

“And Sophie is my daughter.”

Silence.

Daniel continued.

“I forgot which direction responsibility was supposed to go.”

Claire felt something move in her chest.

Not forgiveness.

But maybe the first brick of something better.

Lorraine whispered:

“You’ll regret this.”

Daniel nodded.

“I already regret enough.”

He walked away.

Claire followed.

Then Maya called them back.

The independent committee had found a hidden file in Lorraine’s board drive.

A draft indemnity agreement.

It would require Cross Harbor to reimburse Lorraine personally if trust-related claims arose from the Harbor sale.

Claire stared.

“She planned to make the company pay her legal exposure.”

Maya nodded.

Daniel laughed softly.

“Of course.”

Then another attachment.

A resignation letter.

Pre-drafted.

For Daniel.

Effective immediately after the Harbor closing.

He stared.

“She was going to remove me.”

Claire looked at him.

Lorraine planned to use Daniel until the sale closed.

Then cut him loose.

Just as Arthur warned Camille:

Lorraine burns anyone she can replace.

Daniel finally saw himself in the same line.

May you like

His mother had not only used him to reach Sophie.

She had already planned the moment he stopped being useful.
