Chapter 14 - The Photograph From Three Years AgoLaura stared at the photograph.

Daniel didn't speak.

He waited.

She sat down.

"It isn't what you think."

Daniel almost laughed.

"You finally said it."

"What?"

"The sentence."

She closed her eyes.

"Daniel."

"Three years ago."

"We weren't having an affair."

"You were outside a hotel."

"It was a conference."

"Together."

"Yes."

"Did I know?"

"No."

Daniel scrolled.

There were more photographs.

Restaurant.

Hotel lobby.

Mark's car.

Nothing explicitly intimate.

But enough secrecy to demand explanation.

"Why did he send these?"

Laura looked genuinely confused.

"I don't know."

Daniel opened Mark's message.

Three years ago, Laura came to me because she thought you were going to leave her.

Daniel stopped.

Laura whispered, "Don't."

He continued.

She asked me to help her figure out what you were doing. I agreed. At first, I was investigating you for her.

Daniel looked up.

"Investigating me?"

Laura's face collapsed.

"I thought you were hiding something."

"What?"

"Money."

Daniel laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

"What money?"

"Your father had died. The estate was complicated. You were constantly meeting lawyers."

"Because he died."

"I know."

"Apparently you didn't."

Laura wiped tears from her face.

Daniel read further.

Mark wrote that Laura had asked him to examine Daniel's travel, accounts, and business relationships.

Mark had access.

He was Daniel's friend.

He knew staff.

He knew schedules.

For several months, Mark fed Laura information.

Nothing showed an affair.

Nothing showed hidden money.

Nothing showed plans for divorce.

Daniel looked at her.

"You had my best friend spying on me."

"I was scared."

"Of what?"

"Being blindsided."

The irony was almost too much.

"So you decided to blindside me first?"

"It wasn't like that then."

"When did you stop?"

"After a few months."

"Why?"

"Because there was nothing."

Daniel stared.

There was nothing.

Mark's message continued.

I should have told you. I didn't because by then Laura and I had become close.

Daniel's stomach tightened.

Close.

He kept reading.

Nothing physical happened then. But I crossed lines long before I admitted it. I listened to things about your marriage I had no right to hear. I let her depend on me. I liked that she did.

Daniel looked toward Laura.

"Were you emotionally involved with him three years ago?"

"I don't know."

"That's not an answer."

"We were close."

"Did you want him?"

Laura looked away.

"Sometimes."

The word hurt almost more than the affair.

This hadn't exploded unexpectedly six months ago.

Something had been growing underground for years.

"Did you love him?"

"No."

"You just wanted him."

"I wanted the way he made me feel."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Important."

Laura started crying harder.

"Yes."

Daniel sat on the bed.

For the first time that day, rage wasn't the strongest emotion.

Grief was.

The marriage he thought he'd had seemed to be disappearing backward through time.

A happy tenth year had become a lie.

Then the ninth.

Then the seventh.

How far could betrayal reach before every memory became suspect?

"Was Sophie ever with you during those hotel meetings?"

"No."

"Was anything physical happening?"

"No."

"Did you kiss?"

Laura hesitated.

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

"Once."

Three years ago.

Mark's timeline hadn't begun in January.

Not really.

"When?"

"At the conference."

Daniel looked at the photograph.

"There?"

"Yes."

"And then?"

"I stopped it."

"For two years?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I loved you."

Daniel looked at her.

She corrected herself.

"I do love you."

He stood.

"Don't."

"It's true."

"Maybe."

Laura stared.

Daniel's voice softened.

"But whatever you call love clearly wasn't enough to make me safe with you."

She covered her face.

Daniel continued reading Mark's confession.

There was one final paragraph.

I started the affair this year because I convinced myself Laura had already chosen me. Last week I learned she hadn't. She had asked her lawyer to draft two settlement scenarios. One involved a future with me.

Daniel felt cold.

And the other?

He opened the next attachment.

A scanned memo from Laura's attorney.

SCENARIO B — INDEPENDENT POST-DIVORCE PLAN.

No Mark.

No shared house.

No future together.

Just Laura and Sophie.

Mark had destroyed his friendship believing Laura would eventually choose him.

Laura had destroyed her marriage while refusing to choose either man.

Daniel looked at her.

"Did you ever intend to stay with Mark?"

Laura didn't answer.

"Did you?"

"No."

The word came quietly.

May you like

Daniel closed his eyes.

And somewhere across town, Mark had apparently just realized he'd hidden in a closet for a woman who had always planned to leave him there.
