Chapter 6 - The Deal Laura Needed Daniel to SignWestbridge was not merely another contract.

It was the transaction Daniel had been pursuing for fourteen months.

Bennett Development Group would sell a minority stake in one division to a national investment firm while retaining operational control. The deal would bring millions in liquidity to the business and personally distribute a substantial amount to Daniel.

Laura knew that.

Mark knew even more.

Mark had been Daniel's outside strategic adviser on the transaction.

Daniel looked at the phone.

"Why would Laura care when Westbridge closes?"

Mark hesitated.

"Because some of the distribution becomes personal liquidity."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

He turned toward Laura.

"Your attorney explained this?"

She said nothing.

"Laura."

"Yes."

"How long ago?"

"April."

Two months after the affair began.

Daniel walked to his desk and opened the Westbridge folder.

"What exactly were you waiting for?"

"It wasn't some scheme."

"Then explain it before Mark does."

Laura looked furious now.

"After Westbridge, we'd have more cash. Divorce would be easier for both of us."

Daniel stared at her.

"Easier."

"Yes."

"You mean easier to divide."

"I mean easier to separate without destroying the company."

That answer was intelligent enough to sound reasonable.

Daniel almost admired it.

Almost.

"Then why wait for the prenup deadline too?"

Laura didn't answer.

Daniel opened a spreadsheet.

Projected proceeds.

Taxes.

Company reinvestment.

Personal distribution.

The number beside his name was significant.

Mark's voice came through the phone.

"Daniel, there's something else."

Laura immediately spoke.

"Hang up."

"What else?"

"Mark."

"I found paperwork at her lawyer's office."

Laura went still.

Daniel frowned.

"Why were you at her lawyer's office?"

"I wasn't. She had documents in her car."

"You searched my car?" Laura snapped.

"You left them open."

"You had no right."

Mark laughed.

"That's rich."

Daniel cut in.

"What paperwork?"

"A draft settlement proposal."

Laura looked toward the floor.

"What did it say?"

"Daniel, call your lawyer."

"No. Tell me."

Mark paused.

"She wanted the house."

Laura shook her head.

"It was a draft."

"Primary custody."

"Stop."

"Spousal support."

"It was a negotiation starting point."

"And a percentage of the Westbridge proceeds."

Daniel felt his hands grow cold.

"How much?"

Mark answered.

"Half."

Daniel stared at Laura.

"The house was mine before we married."

"I know."

"My father built this place."

"I know."

"You wanted it?"

"I wanted Sophie to stay in her home."

"Don't use Sophie to make that sound noble."

Laura's eyes flashed.

"You think I was going to throw her into an apartment so you could preserve your memories?"

"No. I think there are about a hundred options between that and secretly preparing to take my house."

"Nothing was filed."

"Because you were waiting."

Laura looked away.

Daniel saw the entire schedule now.

Westbridge closes in nineteen days.

Their tenth anniversary seven days later.

Then Laura files.

By that point, the transaction would increase available marital liquidity and their prenup would enter its post-ten-year terms.

It wasn't illegal.

It might even have been good legal strategy.

But hearing Mark ask When are you finally divorcing him? now sounded different.

Laura wasn't asking for time because she was emotionally conflicted.

She had been waiting for numbers to move.

Daniel felt something inside him become strangely calm.

"Is that why you were being so nice lately?"

Laura stared.

"What?"

"The anniversary trip."

She had suggested Napa.

Three nights.

A beautiful hotel.

She'd even joked that ten years deserved something extravagant.

Daniel had been touched.

Now the memory felt grotesque.

"Were you planning to celebrate ten years with me and then file?"

"Daniel—"

"Answer."

"I didn't know when I would file."

"Did your attorney tell you to wait until after the anniversary?"

Silence.

That was enough.

Daniel ended the call with Mark.

Laura stared at him.

"Why did you hang up?"

"Because I don't need him anymore."

"You think he told you everything?"

"No."

Daniel collected the prenup and Westbridge documents.

"But now I know what questions to ask someone who has no reason to protect either of you."

"Who?"

"My attorney."

Laura's face changed.

"Daniel, once you do that—"

"You already did it."

"This can still be handled privately."

"It will be."

He walked toward the office door.

"Through lawyers."

Laura followed.

"What about Sophie?"

Daniel stopped.

"We tell her nothing until we know what we're doing."

"You're going to try to take her from me."

He turned.

"No."

Laura looked surprised.

Daniel continued.

"I will never punish Sophie by taking away her mother because her mother cheated on me."

Something flickered across Laura's face.

Relief, maybe.

Then Daniel added:

"But if you've been planning to use her in this divorce the way you used her to hide Mark's visits, we're going to have a very different conversation."

Laura's relief disappeared.

Daniel went upstairs to find Sophie.

She was sitting on her bed watching her movie.

When she saw him, she paused it.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah?"

She held up her stuffed rabbit.

"Mommy said we're getting a new house."

Daniel froze.

"When did she say that?"

Sophie shrugged.

"A while ago."

"Did she say who was going to live there?"

Sophie smiled.

"Me, Mommy..."

She hesitated.

May you like

Daniel's heart sank.

"And Uncle Mark."
