Chapter 18 - The One Person Daniel Still TrustedDaniel drove to the office alone.

He did not call Rachel.

He wanted to see her face before she had time to prepare.

At six-fifteen the building was nearly empty.

Rachel sat in her office.

She looked up when he entered.

"Daniel."

He closed the door.

"How long?"

Her expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Daniel's stomach sank.

"You've seen the emails."

"Peter sent them."

Rachel leaned back.

"Of course he did."

"Answer me."

"Since June."

"You're helping Mark remove me."

"No."

"The emails say otherwise."

"They don't."

Daniel put his phone on her desk.

"Read them."

"I wrote them."

"Then explain them."

Rachel looked exhausted.

"Mark came to me in June and said your marriage was collapsing."

"How did he know?"

"He didn't tell me about the affair."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"That's everyone else's favorite omission."

"He said Laura was preparing to file and that you were becoming distracted."

"Was I?"

"No."

"Then why entertain him?"

"Because he told me Westbridge was considering a management condition."

Daniel frowned.

"What condition?"

"That if you became unavailable during integration, there needed to be succession."

"Normal."

"Yes."

"So?"

"Mark wanted himself named."

Daniel waited.

"I told him the board would never approve it without evaluating alternatives."

"What does the email mean?"

Rachel pulled up the entire thread.

Context changed everything.

The line Peter had sent was followed by:

IF THE PERSONAL SITUATION BREAKS THE WAY YOU EXPECT, WE NEED TO MOVE QUICKLY TO PROTECT DANIEL FROM ANY ATTEMPT TO USE IT AGAINST HIM.

Daniel stared.

Peter had sent only part.

Rachel scrolled.

More messages.

Rachel repeatedly warned Mark not to mix Daniel's marriage with governance.

She told him any attempt to exploit a divorce would be reported.

Then one message from Mark:

YOU'RE TOO LOYAL TO HIM.

Rachel's response:

YES.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I should've told you," she said.

"Why didn't you?"

"Because I thought Mark was posturing."

"He was sleeping with Laura."

Rachel went pale.

"What?"

"He was the affair."

She stood.

"Oh my God."

Daniel watched genuine shock move across her face.

"You didn't know."

"No."

"Laura thought you and I were having an affair."

Rachel stared.

Then laughed once from disbelief.

"My husband is going to find that fascinating."

Daniel almost smiled.

Almost.

"Mark implied it."

Her expression hardened.

"That son of a bitch."

Daniel sat.

The weight of the day settled over him.

"Everyone keeps protecting me by lying to me."

Rachel nodded.

"Then I owe you an apology."

"Yes."

"I should have shown you the messages."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because I thought you trusted Mark more than you trusted me."

Daniel looked at her.

That had probably been true.

Rachel continued.

"And because Westbridge was fragile. I didn't want interpersonal nonsense blowing up a deal that matters to eighty employees."

The same justification Mark had used.

Protect the transaction.

Protect Daniel.

Keep him ignorant.

Daniel understood the temptation.

He hated it anyway.

"No more."

Rachel nodded.

"No more."

"If anyone discusses my marriage in relation to my role, I know."

"Agreed."

"If Westbridge wants governance protections, they come directly to me."

"Agreed."

"And Mark is out."

Rachel's eyes widened.

"Completely?"

"Yes."

"That could cost us."

"I know."

She nodded.

"We'll handle it."

Daniel appreciated the word.

We.

Not manipulate.

Not protect him from information.

Handle it.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Laura.

SOPHIE WANTS YOU TO READ HER BEDTIME STORY.

He looked at the time.

Seven-thirty.

DANIEL: Leaving now.

Then another message appeared.

LAURA: I transferred the first $487,216 back to the custodial account. Attorneys copied. The rest clears tomorrow.

Daniel stared.

A second attachment showed confirmation.

For once, Laura had done what she said without being forced by discovery.

It didn't save the marriage.

But it mattered.

Daniel returned home.

Sophie was already in pajamas.

She climbed into his lap with a book.

"Mommy says you're working too much again."

Daniel looked toward Laura.

She stood in the doorway.

"No," Laura said softly. "I said Daddy had work."

Sophie began reading.

Halfway through, she yawned.

Daniel finished the story.

At the end, Sophie looked from him to Laura.

"Can Mommy sleep in here too?"

Laura froze.

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

"Why?"

"Because everybody's acting weird."

Children always found the simplest language for the most complicated things.

Laura sat on the edge of Sophie's bed.

Daniel sat on the other.

For ten minutes, they were a family again.

Not husband and wife.

Just parents beside a child who loved them both.

Sophie fell asleep holding Daniel's finger.

Laura whispered, "I'm sorry."

Daniel looked at his daughter.

"Not here."

Laura nodded.

They left quietly.

In the hallway, she handed him a folder.

"What's this?"

"Everything."

Bank records.

Attorney correspondence.

Recordings.

Property documents.

Her messages with Mark.

Daniel looked at the thick stack.

"Why?"

"Because you shouldn't have to discover another secret."

He almost believed there were none left.

Then he opened the first page.

A timeline prepared by Laura's attorney.

One date was circled.

JANUARY 14 — INITIAL DIVORCE CONSULTATION.

Daniel stared.

January 14.

He knew that date.

It was the day before Mark first claimed Laura approached him.

Daniel looked at her.

"What happened January fourteenth?"

Laura's face changed.

"Why?"

"You didn't randomly wake up and hire a divorce lawyer."

She said nothing.

Daniel felt another truth approaching.

"What happened that day?"

May you like

Laura whispered:

"I found the letter."
